Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick was among millions of people watching the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2025 MLB World Series.
They witnessed how superstar Shohei Ohtani and his teammates fought back-and-forth with the Canadian-based franchise all the way to Game 7.
Then, in the finale, despite facing a deficit, the Los Angeles-based franchise came back to shock Blue Jays fans and win their 2nd consecutive World Series.
Redick is now the head coach of the Dodgers’ sister concern. The NBA Board of Governors agreed to Dodgers owner Mark Walter taking over in a deal that now values the Lakers at $10 billion.
Before their 7th game of the season, reporters, still weary after late-night coverage of the Dodgers, asked the Lakers’ head coach if he was a fan of the 2025 World Series champions.
I became a Dodgers fan when I played for the Clippers. Although… as a Clipper, I remember going to games multiple times, and they were like, ‘Hey, can we put you up on the jumbotron?’ I was like, ‘Hell no! I’m going to get booed! I’m on the Clippers!’
JJ Redick replied, as quoted by Dave McMenamin

This means his affinity for the Los Angeles Dodgers started way back in 2013. But at the time, since he was with the Clippers, often trolled as the B team out of Los Angeles, he did not want to be put up on the jumbotron.
JJ Redick talks about how he wants to invoke ‘heart of a champion’ mindset from his Lakers
Now, as the head coach of the franchise whose fans also support the Los Angeles Lakers, he should not have any problem being projected on the jumbotron at Dodger Stadium.
JJ Redick talked about his relationship with the franchise while answering Claire De Lune‘s question about World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto‘s quote ‘losing isn’t an option.’
When she asked if he could quantify or identify the mindset or heart of a champion among his players, the former Duke standout replied.
I don’t know that it is quantifiable… I’ve always been able to identify it, most coaches can identify… When you’ve got certain guys on your team that have that ‘heart of a champion’, the group can eventually self-identify that way.

The Tennessee native is expecting his Lakers to eventually have the heart of a champion, especially once it seeps from the top players. Last season, JJ Redick asked them to get into championship shape, and now he wants the heart.
Lakers dominate Heat to move to 3rd place in standings
JJ Redick has to manage a team that is struggling with some nagging injuries. Superstar LeBron James is out until at least the middle of the month, which means others have to step up.

So far, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves have done their part, leading the Lakers to wins. In their 7th game, they were facing a Miami Heat team looking to avoid losing 2 straight road games.
That hope was thrown out by halftime as the home team led by 14 points. Even though the Heat tried to stage a comeback, they could not overcome the balanced scoring and defensive prowess of this year’s Lakers team.
Doncic and Reaves were joined by Jake LaRavia, who produced another double-digit effort to continue the streak he started against the Minnesota Timberwolves. That production sees the franchise move up to 3rd in the West.
