“It’s a death sentence…” JJ Redick WARNED taking Lakers coaching job by ex-NBA star
JJ Redick is a front runner for the head coaching vacancy at the Los Angeles Lakers.
Channing Frye warns JJ Redick from taking the head coaching job with the Los Angeles Lakers
JJ Redick has been established as the front-runner for the Los Angeles Lakers head coaching job, a task that brings a lot of pressure. He will also have to make LeBron James and Anthony Davis play to their best.
Considering all that, James’ former teammate, Channing Frye, gave out a strong warning. As a guest on NBA TV, host Lauren Jbara asked the former NBA Champion about his views on Redick taking the helm at LA.
To be honest, I think it's a death sentence. I think he’s jumping on a grenade. I know for a fact JJ Redick is a coach. But taking that job, I just don't know. That's a lot. You're jumping in and not only coaching in NBA, when you haven't ever done that before. But you're also coaching Anthony Davis, D'Angelo Russell, LeBron James. And how do you know time and score situations? This is not a, let's learn your way through. They were crushing Darvin Ham for not having the right substitution patterns. So, for me, I wouldn't take that job. So as a first-year coach, I wouldn't recommend that job for anybody.Channing Frye said
Essentially, Channing Frye suggested that Redick would be better off taking a job elsewhere. Somewhere where he can have the time and patience to learn as they go.
The Los Angeles Lakers have a flawed roster. Add to that the franchise would want to win another title or two before LeBron James retires. That means he will have to forge a winning culture from day one. Not an easy task for a first time head coach.
Therefore, Frye would prefer if Redick passed on this job or even took up an assistant’s position under someone like Sam Cassell. Cassell has been coaching as an assistant for a long time and knows the pressures well.
JJ Redick benefits from LeBron James’ team management
If JJ Redick was not working on podcasts alongside LeBron James, it is a given he might not even be in contention for a shout at a coaching job. However, the friendship alone would not win games in the upcoming season. Therefore, JJ Redick will need LeBron James to make some other moves on the team to benefit both of them.
The four-time champion will have to pressure the front office to assemble a team that can play to the strengths of James and Anthony Davis. At the same time, be able to alleviate the scoring load off of them. Bringing in a third superstar can solve the latter. But for the former to work, they have to make some serious changes to the existing roster.
Only then can Redick have a squad good enough to win basketball games. Which eventually means he may not be on the hot seat throughout the season.
