After sitting on 114 sacks for nearly two weeks, TJ Watt finally recorded the 115th sack of his career on Sunday (November 23). He surpassed his brother JJ Watt as the sack leader in the Watt family.

On the second play of the second quarter, Watt rushed the Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams. He out-muscled offensive tackle Darnell Wright before bringing Williams down to the ground.

The ball came loose from Williams’ grasp, and the Steelers players pounced on it to score a defensive touchdown. The NFL awarded the Steelers six points and Watt one sack.

It was enough for the All-Pro pass rusher to record his 7th sack of the 2025 season and 115th of his career. Watt surpassed his older brother JJ, who had 114.5 prey to his name in a career spanning over 12 seasons and two teams (Texans and Cardinals).

JJ covered the game at Soldier Field alongside Ian Eagle for CBS Sports. Cameras caught the 3x NFL Defensive Player of the Year cracking a joke about unretiring to increase his sack count.

Well, that’s it… I am gonna put the pads back on, because this is preposterous.

Watt’s contributions mattered little in the outcome as the Steelers lost 28-31 to the Bears. The Steelers’ pass rush only recorded one sack and one quarterback hit on Williams the entire game. As a result, the Steelers still haven’t won in Chicago since their last victory back in 1995.

Despite the achievement, Watt hasn’t had a great year. The 31-year-old has struggled to reach the heights of his previous seasons. After 11 games, he has accumulated 43 combined tackles, 9 tackles for loss, and 7 sacks.

TJ Watt is losing ground on his biggest rival

The Steelers fell to 6-5 due to the defeat. Although they are still in the mix for the playoffs, the Steelers’ inconsistent form could come back to haunt them at the business end of the season.

Mike Tomlin‘s team blew the chance to firmly establish their dominance in the AFC North when both the Ravens and Bengals struggled to win games. However, the Ravens’ five-game winning streak has propelled them to the top of the division.

At the thick of it is the Steelers’ defense. The 28th-ranked total defense has conceded the most passing yards per game. Watt, Cam Heyward, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig, and Derrick Harmon are all top players, but they have combined for 24 sacks (34 overall).

The Steelers pale in comparison to the league’s two best defenses, the Broncos (49) and the Browns (42). Watt’s biggest competitor, the Browns’ Myles Garrett, recorded his 18th sack in a win over the Raiders.

Watt needs to get his head in the game for the Steelers to push for a direct playoff spot. That task will only get harder. Next week, they host the Buffalo Bills, who are 7-4 and second in their division.
