JJ Watt could not believe his eyes after he realized how much his brother TJ Watt will earn in three years—$123 million ($41 million per year) and $108 million fully guaranteed. It was close to the amount the Houston Texans legend had accumulated during his NFL career.
The 36-year-old retired athlete scrolled through X, gathering information on his brother’s extension. He stopped on a graphic created by the folks at CBS Sports.
Upon processing the information, JJ realized that his brother would earn only $6.7 million less in the next three years than he had amassed in his entire NFL career. Most individuals might become jealous, but that doesn’t apply to the Watt brothers.
The 3x Defensive Player of the Year retweeted the graphic with a cheeky caption.
I swear, if this guy even lets me begin to reach for my wallet at dinner….
JJ Watt tweeted
He’s right about that. TJ should pick up the tab at the next family dinner or treat them to a nice vacation.

This news is worth celebrating for the Steelers fans. Most have spent countless nights fretting over the fact that he might end up asking to be traded.
Watt began his holdout from attending training sessions during the offseason early on. He missed both OTAs and the minicamp.
In the meantime, the Steelers were busy wrapping up other deals. General manager Omar Khan signed future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers as the starting quarterback and traded for Super Bowl-winning CB Jalen Ramsey and Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith.
Watt waited patiently for his chance. The Steelers rewarded him with a three-year extension that will run until the 2028 season.
How much will TJ Watt earn from his three-year contract extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers?
Watt replaced Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase as the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history with the extension. However, ML Football shared some interesting details about Watt’s contract that might change fans’ perspective regarding his earning potential.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Watt’s deal is $41 million per year. However, he won’t earn that much because he must pay $15.17 million in federal tax, $1.26 million in Pennsylvania state tax, $770,000 to FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act), $810,000 in Jock Tax, and 3% of his salary to his agent, which is $1.23 million.
After paying all the taxes, TJ Watt will eventually earn $21.76 million. It may not be $41.3 million, but it’s still enough money to take his family to several lavish dinners.

According to Spotrac, the Steelers had a total cap allocation of $298.2 million and $25.2 million in cap space for the 2025 season. Even before the extension, Watt was the Steelers’ highest-earning football player. The extension means he will carry a cap hit of $30 million.
The Steelers drafted Watt in the 2017 first round. Since then, he has earned first-team All-Pro honors four times, seven Pro Bowl nods, and a Defensive Player of the Year award.
During his DPOY year, Watt tied the single-season sack record with 22.5. In 2024, he logged 61 tackles, 11.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, and six forced fumbles.
A notable numbers coincidence:

The Steelers mean business with the signings and the contract extensions. If there was ever a year to challenge for the Super Bowl, then it has to be the present one. According to Sharp Football Analysis, the Steelers have a +4000 chance of winning the Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium in February.
