FC Barcelona find themselves in a tough spot. The Blaugrana finished the season without a single trophy to show for, and to make things worse, ended their campaign by ‘firing’ club legend and manager Xavi Hernandez. Just when fans though things couldn’t get any worse, eternal rivals Real Madrid made the signing of Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain official.
One would think that the immediate response should be to bolster the squad and be well equipped to give the Los Blancos a run for their money next season. However, except for the signing of new manager Hansi Flick, not much has been done at the club. In a statement considered to be ‘worrying’ by several fans, club President Joan Laporta announced that there won’t be any ‘big name’ signings.
I don't think we'll go for any big names and we won't be selling our stars. We're looking for a new winger and a midfielder.Joan Laporta told Barca ONE
Despite the need for reinforcements, Laporta is confident that Barca’s ‘own’ talents can fill in at these positions. The club have been linked to Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich in recent months.
Fans react to Joan Laporta’s ‘worrying’ statement
No Barcelona fan would be feeling 100% confident going in to the upcoming season. After seeing their biggest rivals bring home one of the biggest talents on the planet, fans have started to worry how their club is looking to respond. A fan commented that Barcelona won’t be winning trophies in the near future, pointing to Laporta’s ‘strange’ decision.
Another added Laporta was simply trying to hide their financial bottleneck and their subsequent inability to sign ‘big names’. Pointing to the Kimmich situation, a fan said that he only rejected the club’s initial offer because it was too low and that they couldn’t afford him. However, one supporter claimed that this decision by Laporta would only benefit the club in the long run.
Fans drew similarities to how Real Madrid assembled the Galacticos consisting of the likes of David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane. Barcelona at that time fielded their academy talents and homegrown players like Lionel Messi and Xavi Hernandez. Madrid recently announced Mbappe’s signing with a 3:44 minute long video. The 25-year old will join the club after the Euros.
