Joao Fonseca has been impressive this season, having enjoyed a formidable run on tour and claimed his first ATP title. However, he has suffered several disappointments, which have been a setback to his advancement on tour. However, he views it as a way of getting used to the unpredictable nature of the circuit.

Fonseca’s easy playing style, mixed with raw power and a brilliant forehand, has led to a drawn comparison with Roger Federer, who happens to be his idol. The Next Gen Finals champion has climbed more than 650 places in the past 18 months and currently sits in the Top 60 of the ATP.

The Brazilian teenager has grown beyond expectations on tour, as he claimed his first top 10 win of his career after beating Andrey Rublev in the first round of the Australian Open. After that, he claimed his first tour-level title at Buenos Aires following a win over Francisco Cerundolo in the final.

He also earned his first main draw win at the Roland Garros and did well to reach the third round before losing to Jack Draper in straight sets. The Brazilian teenager began his grass-court campaign at the Terra Wortmann Open, where he lost to Flavio Cobolli in a tight three-set match in the first round. He claimed his first main draw win on grass after beating Zizou Bergs in three sets in Eastbourne.

Ahead of the Wimbledon Championship, the 18-year-old is now a mature player on tour. During an interview with The Guardian, he revealed that he believes that everything is possible at the biggest stage of sports and is open to winning and losing matches:

I know there’s going to be some bad weeks. The first weeks on clay I was not playing my best. Then in the French Open, I started playing much, much better. I know everything is possible. I can lose first round. I can win the tournament. I just need to focus match after match. Hopefully, I can do good things.

Fonseca has changed his goals since winning the Argentina Open in February. The Brazilian is now focused on being seeded (inside the Top 32) at next year’s Australian Open. Also, he hopes to improve to get to the top of the men’s circuit, competing with players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

Taylor Fritz ends Joao Fonseca’s run at the Eastbourne International

Joao Fonseca suffered a second-round loss at the Eastbourne International after losing to top seed Taylor Fritz. The match was suspended on Wednesday (June 25) due to darkness after they split sets. In the continuation of the match, Fritz reigned supreme, despite Fonseca’s constant fight back.

The match eventually ended in the Stuttgart Open champion’s favour, 6-3, 6(5)-7, 7-5 in two hours and two minutes. Fritz, who has won the Eastbourne International on three occasions revealed after the match that he feels really confident in his game:

I’m really happy. I was really happy with the level of tennis last night, it’s a shame we couldn’t finish the match then. Coming out today, it was tough to really judge my grass-court play, there was a lot of scrapping around.

Fritz then faced Marcos Giron in the quarter-finals in Eastbourne. The top seed led his fellow compatriot 4-2 in their head-to-head record on tour ahead of the match. He eventually earned a hard-fought three-set win over Giron. Meanwhile, Fonseca will now leave for Wimbledon, where he will make his first main draw appearance in the Grand Slam tournament.
