Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca finally realized his dream. He met his idol, Roger Federer, before the Laver Cup – the team tournament created by the Swiss maestro.

Fonseca will be making his debut at the Laver Cup and will play under new Team World captain Andre Agassi against Team Europe. The 19-year-old has often talked about Federer being his idol, but never got the chance to meet the 44-year-old in person until this week in San Francisco, where the Laver Cup is scheduled to start on September 19.

Laver Cup’s Instagram handle shared the clip of Fonseca fulfilling his childhood dream. “My hands are sweating because I’m going to meet Roger,” Fonseca said before meeting Federer. The 20-time Grand Slam champion then emerged as the next-gen star and the tennis legend embraced each other.

Finally, nice to meet you. It’s a pleasure. Congratulations on everything so far. Well done on a great career.

In Brazil, we say ‘when we are Brazilian, we never give up,’ and when you’re playing for your country, you cannot not believe. I wanna thank my team for supporting me to the end. I was just looking at them and the support for each point. I knew he’d be nervous. He’s in Greece, he’s losing 1-2 in the tie. He’s more nervous. I just played my game. I’m very happy to win this match.

Joao Fonseca said during his on-court interview

Tsitsipas dealt with injury issues, but despite that, he played for his team. The 2023 Australian Open finalist won just the Dubai Open this season and is not enjoying good form. Davis Cup was the 27-year-old’s first tournament since his second-round exit at the US Open.

This season, the two-time Grand Slam finalist failed to reach the third rounds of all four Majors. He is on the cusp of dropping out of the top 30. At present, he is occupying the No.27 position. The last time Tsitsipas won multiple titles was in 2023 (Monte Carlo Masters and the Mallorca Open).

Fonseca has one ATP title to his name, the 2025 Argentina Open. He made his Grand Slam main draw debut this year at the Australian Open and reached the second round. In the next three Majors, Fonseca lost in the third rounds of the French Open and Wimbledon, while at the US Open, his campaign ended in the second round.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion has won just the Geneva Open this season and also played the Miami Open final (lost to Jakub Mensik). It’s uncertain where he will play next. But he has confirmed that he will play an ATP 250 event in Athens later this year.
