Joao Fonseca has enjoyed a breakthrough season in the ATP Tour, having stunned top seeds in events and has already lifted a trophy. However, his biggest challenge will be at the Laver Cup in San Francisco, where he’s likely to face World No.1 and six-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz in the event.
Fonseca started the year as World No.145 but has climbed into the top 45 of the ATP rankings and has had a spectacular season. He won his maiden tour-level title at the ATP Argentina Open. Before that, he started the year with a remarkable performance, stunning top 10 star Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open.
He also enjoyed his best results in Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the third round of both the Roland Garros and Wimbledon Championships. That has made Team World coach Andre Agassi call him to join the team ahead of the Laver Cup, which kicks off on the 18th to the 21st of September.
Fonseca will join the other stars such as Taylor Fritz, Alex de Minaur, Reilly Opelka, Alex Michelsen, and fellow South American Francisco Cerundolo. They will take on Team Europe, which is headlined by Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, World No.11 Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, and two debutants, Jakub Mensik and Flavio Cobolli.
Team Europe enters the tournament as defending champion after Alcaraz earned them the title last season. However, Fonseca has often revealed that he hopes to face Alcaraz in the future but now relishes a potential opportunity of taking on the Spaniard at the Laver Cup tournament in San Francisco. He revealed this via Tennisuptodate:
An amazing opportunity to be around great players, great captains. I’m going to love it for sure. The Laver Cup will be super nice to cheer for each other. Hopefully, the Laver Cup will teach me a lot. I love playing with the best. Carlos [Alcaraz] or Sascha [Zverev] would be super. If Andre picked me for anyone, I’ll be ready.
Fonseca helped Brazil secure a spot in next year’s qualifying for the Davis Cup Finals. The 19-year-old led the visiting Brazilian side to a 3-1 win over Greece. The youngster defeated former World No.3 Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to claim the ticket for his country. He hopes to do the same at the Laver Cup.
Carlos Alcaraz continues his stay at the top of the ATP rankings, two weeks after winning the US Open
Carlos Alcaraz maintained his stay at the top of the ATP rankings for the second consecutive week following his triumph at the US Open. He leads with 11,540 points at the top and has been the most standout player on tour since April, winning six titles and reaching the final of eight consecutive tournaments.

Jannik Sinner comes in at World No.2 with 10,780 points, a 760-point difference from the World No.1. For the Italian star to overtake Alcaraz and get back to the top again before December, he will have to win all the tournaments he will compete in until the end of the season. The 24-year-old has 2,830 points to defend for the remainder of the season, including the ATP Finals in Turin, while Alcaraz has just 1,000 points to defend.
The chase for Sinner looks like a mountain to climb, as Alcaraz has been in form in recent months and doesn’t look to be backing down any time soon. The Spaniard is known to play poorly in indoor hard court events and will surely miss most of the European indoor tournaments, which precede the ATP Finals in November.
Anyway, Alexander Zverev continues his stay at the World No.3. He has been in the position since May. Novak Djokovic is behind him in the rankings, as the Serbian legend overtook American star Taylor Fritz following his semi-final run at the US Open.
