Joao Fonseca has been one of the biggest young sensations in men’s tennis, but he has absolutely failed to live up to expectations this season. After claiming two titles last year, he has managed to reach two quarter-finals this season and has not won a match on clay since the Munich Open last month.
Fonseca’s last win on tour came at the Munich Open, where he defeated Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals. He then suffered a 3-6, 6-3, 3-6 loss against Ben Shelton in the following match. He left Madrid without a win as Rafael Jodar knocked him out in the third after earning a second-round walkover.
The 19-year-old crashed out of the Italian Open on Sunday (May 10). Despite being the favorite heading into the match, he collapsed to Hamad Medjedovic 3-6, 6-3, 6(1)-7, making it his third consecutive defeat on the clay and fourth in his last six matches on the surface, which is his most natural surface.
Nevertheless, Fonseca leaves the Rome Masters with a place guaranteed as a seeded player at the French Open, which could be his second time among the 32 seeds at a Grand Slam tournament. This means he will face higher-ranked rivals from the first to the third round at Roland Garros in Paris.
But with his lack of confidence in recent weeks, he might not be able to reach the third round. The Brazilian teenager has yet to win a Grand Slam match this season and would do something impeccable to get back to form at the French Open. Following his loss in Rome, he admitted to ESPN Brazil that he will continue to keep his head high:
Obviously, people will ask if João is more frustrated than usual. It’s about the opportunities—they’re coming fewer and fewer—but I’ve already identified that issue and I’m working hard to improve. Another lesson, another chance to grow, different points. Tennis is great because the following week there’s another chance to go out there and play your best. So we move on—after a tough loss, we move on with our heads held high.
However, Fonseca will play the Hamburg Open next week before traveling to Paris for the French Open. Very few top 20 players will feature at the tournament, which allows the 19-year-old to get more matches and wins before the Roland Garros. But the South American player will have to take his opportunities at the event.
Joao Fonseca’s poor run this season began with an injury problem
Joao Fonseca didn’t start the 2026 season in his best physical state. He entered the year struggling with a back problem that forced him to withdraw from the Brisbane International and Adelaide International. He had to play the Australian Open without a warm-up and didn’t get past the opening round.

In February, he aimed to defend the Argentina Open at Buenos Aires but didn’t win his opening match. He complained that he was not yet pain-free as his back problems still give him a bit of an issue. However, he got his first win at the Rio Open – his home tournament – but lost to Ignacio Buse in three sets.
It was the Indian Wells Open that Fonseca won his three consecutive matches for the first time in over four months. The teenage star managed just one win in Miami before reaching his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finals of his career at the Monte Carlo Open. A few days later, he got to the quarter-finals of the Munich Open before losing to Ben Shelton.
Since then, he has not won a match. Tennis legend Andre Agassi advised Fonseca earlier this season that he needed to block out the noise around him to focus on improving. He will have to do it now, as a lot of media hype might have made him comfortable. He has to return to persistent work outside the court to get his game back on track.
