Joao Fonseca takes motivation from Roger Federer, the eight-time Wimbledon champion. Federer is also a co-founder of Team8, the agency that represents Fonseca. Having that connection could easily go to his head.
Despite being labeled as the next big thing, Fonseca remains grounded. His attitude has been calm and focused throughout his Wimbledon debut. He’s handling the spotlight with surprising maturity for his age. Fonseca said on Tennis Channel:
I mean, he’s my idol. Before going to grass season, I have been watching some highlights of him. Halle and here at Wimbledon. The way he played so simple is just amazing. You think it’s easy to play, but it’s not. So, it was good because it inspires you how to play.
Fonseca is just 18, but his performance suggests much more experience. He has shown composure and control on the court. So far, he has only lost one set in two rounds. This marks his second consecutive run into the third round of a Grand Slam. It’s a clear sign that his talent is real, and he is proving himself on one of tennis’s biggest stages.
Joao Fonseca reaches Round 3 at Wimbledon
Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca extended his strong Wimbledon debut on Wednesday with a historic win. He defeated Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, becoming the first Brazilian man since 2010 to reach the third round at SW19. The 18-year-old handled the windy conditions and outplayed Brooksby in just over three hours.

The match was Fonseca’s first meeting with Brooksby and added another milestone. He became the youngest man to make the third round at Wimbledon since Bernard Tomic in 2011. Up next for the Brazilian is qualifier Nicolas Jarry, who eased past Learner Tien in straight sets.
Fonseca, in only his fourth grass-court event, occasionally struggled with balance but fed off the lively atmosphere on Court 12. Supported by fans from both Brazil and the U.S., he played with freedom and produced 50 winners. One highlight was a stretched backhand from deep behind the baseline early in the fourth set.
Brooksby came in with momentum after reaching the Eastbourne final. He mixed drop shots and variety to disrupt Fonseca’s rhythm. The American broke back to level at 4-4 in the fourth set, but Fonseca immediately responded to close out the win. His rise this year began with an upset over Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open and a title run in Buenos Aires, followed by another third-round appearance at Roland Garros.
Novak Djokovic surpasses another Roger Federer record
Novak Djokovic earned a measure of revenge on Thursday by defeating Daniel Evans 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 to reach Wimbledon’s third round. The match was significant, marking their first encounter since Evans upset Djokovic in straight sets at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.

With this Centre Court win, Djokovic made history. He passed Roger Federer for the most third-round appearances in Wimbledon’s Open Era, reaching that stage for the 19th time. The 38-year-old now holds a record of 99 victories and just 12 defeats at the All England Club.
Although the final score appeared one-sided, Djokovic had to find his footing early. After a slow start, he settled in, taking control of the first set at 5-3 and closing it out with confidence. From that point on, he dominated the match.
Evans tried to disrupt Djokovic’s rhythm by coming to the net, but the Serbian stayed in control. His clean hitting and precise shot-making left little room for error. It was one of Djokovic’s most convincing performances of the season.
