Joao Fonseca registered his second ATP Masters 1000 win on Thursday (March 6). He made his Indian Wells debut against Jacob Fearnley and beat the Brit with scores of 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

Following his match, he ran into Novak Djokovic, who is chasing his record sixth Indian Wells title. The sixth seed has received a first-round bye and will be kick-starting his Sunshine Doubles campaign against Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp.

Djokovic, ahead of his match, spoke highly of the 18-year-old. He sees great potential in the Brazilian and has compared him with four-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz. Roger Federer fan Fonseca, who had expressed his wish to change the outcome of the Swiss maestro’s match against Djokovic in 2019 Wimbledon, talked about his brief encounter with the Serb.

I met Carlos before my match. I asked him how he was doing. But with Novak…I was just leaving the court where I had practiced after my match, and he was entering. He asked me if I had won. I said yes and he congratulated me. It was just super cool that he talked to me.

Joao Fonseca said at the press conference

The young sensation is chasing his second tournament of the season after clinching his career’s first ATP win at the Argentina Open this season. He will be facing 13th seed Jack Draper in the second round.

Patrick McEnroe reveals why Novak Djokovic hired Andy Murray

Andy Murray, after guiding Novak Djokovic to the Australian Open final, will be in his box for the ongoing tournament. Former ATP player-turned-commentator Patrick McEnroe explained why the five-time Indian Wells champion offered the coaching role to the Scot after his retirement at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Novak has brought in some great players down the years like (Andre) Agassi, (Boris) Becker, and Goran Ivanisevic and I think it’s a way to keep himself motivated.

Patrick McEnroe told Tennis365

Before Murray, the 24-time Grand Slam champion worked with Ivanisevic but they parted ways in March last year. Djokovic was trophyless on the tour and was hoping to bounce back with Murray in his team.

In the Australian Open, the 37-year-old Djokovic surprised the tennis world by reaching the semifinals despite injury struggles. But his hamstring injury forced him to retire mid-match in the last four. He then was knocked out of the Qatar Open opening round match by Matteo Berrettini and is yet to reach a final this season.
