Joao Fonseca has continued to showcase his qualities in the biggest stages this season. The Brazilian first announced himself at the Australian Open by beating Andrey Rublev and winning the Argentina Open. At Indian Wells, he earned his first win in the California desert and revealed the dream for his career.
Fonseca has been one of the standout players this season and has already hit a brilliant 20-3 win-loss record. The 18-year-old star finished last season winning the Next Gen ATP Finals title and has carried on his brilliant form since then. In Indian Wells, he faced World No.81 Jacob Fearnley in the first round and prevailed in the topsy-turvy battle.
The Brazilian teenager won the first set without any much fight from Fearnley. But his British opponent then retaliated by winning the second 6-1 in the windy conditions. In the third set, both players went head-to-head searching for the winner. Fearnley drew first blood and led 3-1 before Fonseca produced an excellent comeback to win five consecutive match points.
Fonseca won the tie 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to reach the second round of the Indian Wells Masters. The 18-year-old was asked what his dream was during an interview, and he narrated that was simply to be World No.1.
I think every professional player, or one in the junior ranks, wants to become top 10 or play against their idol. But my dream is to become number one, I’ve said it several times, and I’m working to achieve it. I’ve worked very hard to get there. Joao

Joao Fonseca says everything on Tour is new to him as his fame continues to grow
Joao Fonseca’s fame has skyrocketed since he defeated Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open in January. Despite just being in his second year as a professional player, he has already climbed into the Top 100. After winning the Argentina Open, he was celebrated in his home country – Brazil – as a hero.

Following his win in Indian Wells he was asked how he was getting used to the Tour and the fame. Fonseca revealed that everything is still new to him and that sometimes it feels like pressure.
Everything is new. It’s my first time here. My second year as a professional. I’m entering the best tournaments. I just met Novak and Carlos. So seeing these guys is good. Everything is great. Sometimes I feel some pressure, but it’s normal, and I have to be prepared for it. I just have to focus on what I need to do, win matches, and concentrate with my team on the routines.
