Joao Fonseca has now become a two-time ATP titlist, and the player he beat in the Swiss Indoors final was Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, for whom it was his fifth consecutive tour-level final defeat. On Sunday (October 26), Fonseca handed the Spaniard a 6-3, 6-4 defeat to win the biggest match of his career.
Prior to the ATP 500 event in Basel, the Brazilian defeated Francisco Cerundolo in the ATP 250 Argentina Open. Since then, he suffered quite a few early-round exits until he started his campaign in Basel. En route to defeating Fokina, the 19-year-old knocked out a couple of players and received back-to-back walkovers- from Jakub Mensik and Denis Shapovalov. Following his win, Fonseca made a hilarious confession- that he promised to shave his head if he won the ATP 500 tournament.
Thanks a lot to you guys and…we make the promise that if we won one of these tournaments, we’re gonna shave my head so…so yeah (laughs). So soon, I am not gonna be with hair.

Fonseca now holds a 2-0 head-to-head record over Fokina, as prior to Basel, the latter gave a walkover when they met in the second round of this year’s Cincinnati Masters. Fokina’s losing streak in finals started at the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters, where he defeated two-time Grand Slam runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas. Since then, he played no finals until this year.

At the Delray Beach Open, the 26-year-old lost to Miomir Kecmanovic. While at the Mexican Open and Citi Open, Tomas Machac and Alex de Minaur denied him the win.
Both players will next be playing the Paris Masters. Fonseca will play his debut Paris Masters match against Shapovalov. 15th seed Fokina will lock horns with last year’s runner-up, Ugo Humbert.
Joao Fonseca thanks his family after his Swiss Indoors win
Joao Fonseca‘s family had booked a flight to Paris, but they changed their flight and headed to Basel just in time to watch their son win the Swiss Indoors. Following his win, Fonseca sent a heartfelt tribute to his parents.

It is crazy. I want to thank my family and my coaches who helped me achieve this amazing effort. My parents just came from Brazil. They were coming to Paris and changed their flights and came here one hour before the match with my uncles. It is just amazing to have them here for the biggest title of my career. It is a pleasure playing this sport and this tournament, and I am very happy.

Fonseca is tipped by many to join Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner to form another Big 3 similar to the Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer era. At present, Alcaraz and Sinner are winning in almost every tournament they are playing in. When Fonseca won his Swiss Indoors title in Vienna, Sinner clinched his fourth trophy of the season.
Joao Fonseca reaches a career-best ranking
Fonseca has now reached a career-best No.19 in the ATP rankings table. The 19-year-old has 1,615 points, and if he wins the Paris Masters, he will remove Fokina to climb to the No.15 rankings with 2,615 points.

Fokina has also reached his career-best ranking of No.15. In Masters 1000 events, he has twice reached the semifinals: in the 2023 Canadian Open and this year’s Monte Carlo Masters. Last year at the Paris Masters, Fokina, after playing the qualifying rounds, withdrew from the main draw. He has played the main draw events in Paris four times, with his best performance being a third-round appearance on his debut in 2020.
