Joao Fonseca finished the season as the No.24 player with two titles. After hogging the limelight by defeating Learner Tien in the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals, Fonseca did not take much time to take home his career’s first tour-level title.
He defeated home favorite Francisco Cerundolo in the Argentina Open. The teen sensation then grabbed the ATP 500 Swiss Indoors by defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Apart from these wins, he also made his Grand Slam debut, reaching the second rounds of the Australian Open and the US Open, and the third rounds of the French Open and Wimbledon. The fact that he started the season as the No.700 player and finished as the No. 25 sure is an impressive feat, his coach, Guilherme Teixeira, is very proud of.
When we look at the numbers, going from No. 700 to No. 25, the reality is that it’s an almost terrifying leap. I confess that we’ve never paid much attention to the rankings, but at this point in his career, it’s almost inevitable. Even though he’s already in the top 25, what keeps pushing us is reaching the next step. Of course, it’s gratifying for the whole team to see him make such a big leap, but right now we’re focused first on consolidating at this level, and then planning the steps to reach the next one.

Teixeira wants a long career for his protege. Apart from his on-court performance, another aspect that Fonseca needs to focus on is having a good relationship with people.
Values don’t depend on the game we play or how we perform on the court. I always tell him that we are preparing to be on the tour for the next 15 years, so the best thing is that we cultivate good atmospheres, good friendships, and treat people as we would like to be treated.
Fonseca’s season ended at the Paris Masters. He lost the round of 32 match against Karen Khachanov in three sets.
Guilherme Teixeira on Joao Fonseca’s family
Guilherme Teixeira also talked about another pillar of strength for the rise of Joao Fonseca. It’s his parents, Christiano and Roberta, who did not try to interfere with Teixeira’s tennis decision.

I give a lot of value to the family; his parents always endorsed me to their son: ‘Guilherme is your coach, you discuss tennis matters with him, we are here to support’.

Due to Fonseca’s ranking surge, he won’t have to feature in the qualifying rounds in the Grand Slam events. He, in fact, will be seeded in these events. Fonseca featured in 17 tour-level tournaments and ended the season with a 26-16 win-loss record.
But climbing up on the ranking ladder also means a great amount of pressure will be on the 19-year-old to perform well, especially in the Grand Slam events. Many, in fact, believe the Brazilian is capable of joining Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz to form another Big 3.
Fonseca has never met either Alcaraz or Sinner. He would have faced the six-time Grand Slam champion had Team World decided to make him play Alcaraz in the Laver Cup. Like many from the tennis world, Alcaraz has also made a huge prediction about Fonseca. The World No.1 called him a “special player” and lauded his shot-making abilities, especially his forehand.
And the only area Alcaraz thinks Fonseca needs improvement in is mobility. The 22-year-old is convinced Fonseca will become a top 3 but also warned him that work never stops, that to maintain his position, he has to perform consistently.
