Welterweight star Joaquin Buckley came to UFC Edmonton to upset home crowd favorite Mike Malott. However, he suffered a brutal knee strike knockout in the second round. Meanwhile, Dana White and Sean Strickland caught everyone’s attention in the process.

The American fighter entered UFC Edmonton with a two-fight losing streak that he suffered at the hands of Kamaru Usman and Sean Brady. Those losses came via decision, but this one remained devastating due to the brutal strikes from the Canadian.

After the event concluded, the UFC CEO spoke with the reporters. Then, James Lynch asked White about Malott’s victory and Buckley’s defeat. The UFC CEO praised Malott for securing a big win in front of the Canadian fans.

Soon after, he cracked a joke about potentially cutting Joaquin Buckley. This was in response to Lynch asking White about ‘New Mansa’ snubbing a handshake during the ceremonial weigh-ins last night.

All of these guys deal with fight week differently and everybody’s pretty nasty as you get close to the weigh-ins… I’ve been in the business for so long, you can’t take any of that stuff personally… As soon as he lost, I told Hunter, ‘Cut him.’ I’m joking.

Dana White told James Lynch

Although White joked about the handshake snub, Strickland didn’t hold back. Hours before the main event, the middleweight champion predicted that Malott would win against Buckley. Strickland used his typical style of speaking to criticize Buckley and predict the result.

Yeah, as you all know that I’m a degenerate gambling company peddler now, so I’m gonna give you my main event, Buckley versus Malott. It’s not because Buckley’s black, maybe a little bit cuz Buckley’s black. Malott, bro, all day, any day. Buckley can’t fight. The guy is like a turtle.

Not too long ago, Buckley had a six-fight winning streak with wins over perennial contenders like Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, Vicente Luque, and Colby Covington. However, things haven’t gone his way after his impressive 2024 campaign.

Buckley is now on a three-fight losing run and will have to fight further down the rankings. He fought two grapplers previously in Usman and Brady. This time, Malott was a striker just like him and fans thought it was a favorable matchup for him.

Things haven’t gone his way in the last year. ‘New Mansa’ will likely be out for the rest of the year due to the impending medical suspension. It remains to be seen who the promotion pairs him up against in his next bout.

Mike Malott was not bothered by the antics of Joaquin Buckley

Ahead of the fight night event in Edmonton, Joaquin Buckley presented a focused version of himself at the ceremonial weigh-ins. Fans thought that ‘New Mansa’ debuted a new gimmick.

To that end, Buckley refused to shake hands during the faceoff or touch gloves before his bout with Malott began. During the post-fight presser, an interviewer asked about what he thought about Buckley’s antics. The Canadian star admitted that he didn’t care what his opponent did before fighting.

I don’t care what the guys do, man. I’ve had guys talk trash, I’ve had guys who want to be my buddy and I’ve got guys being indifferent. The way they act before the fight doesn’t really matter… We’re gonna step into the octagon and I don’t care what you said before… I’m going to pick you apart and hopefully highlight reel you.

MMA fans have started clowning on Joaquin Buckley after his new gimmick failed. This usually happens when a fighter comes up with a new version of themselves and fail inside the octagon.

Meanwhile, Malott could return by January of next year for his next fight. The promotion will return to Canada for UFC 336 and Malott could face a top 10 opponent on that fight card.
