In Short
  • Joe Brady expresses strong belief in Keon Coleman despite his struggles in the NFL.
  • Coleman has faced challenges including injuries, dropped passes, and disciplinary issues.
  • Bills' general manager Brandon Beane supports Coleman, emphasizing the need for maturity and focus.

Newly appointed Bills head coach Joe Brady sent a clear message to wide receiver Keon Coleman, who, despite his high upside, has struggled to cope with the fast-paced world of the NFL. For the longest time, it appeared as if the Bills would opt to trade Coleman to another team when Sean McDermott was still around.

Owner Terry Pegula’s comments about the second-year wideout did not do him any favors either. That said, Brady is not ready to give up on Coleman just yet. Speaking with CBS Sports on Thursday at the NFL Combine, Brady made it clear that he believes in Coleman, but it comes with expectations.

I stood on the table for Keon [Coleman]. I told Keon, as soon as I got hired, ‘Look, man, the best thing to happen to you is me being your head coach. The faith I have in you—we’re going to make it work together‘.

The Bills traded with the Chiefs to select Coleman in the first round. Brandon Beane selected the 6-foot-4, physically gifted wide receiver, as he seemed like the perfect target man for quarterback Josh Allen after they parted ways with Stefon Diggs.

Injuries limited his playing time, but still, he caught 29 passes for 556 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. Even though football pundits expected Coleman to take a giant leap, his production went down in the second year. In 13 games (6 starts), Coleman caught 38 passes for 404 yards and 4 TDs.

There’s a lot of pressure that comes with being the top [draft] pick, and I understand that. But I was the one who wanted him, and I’m going to do everything I can to make it work because he has all the talent. When you see him out there making plays, good things happen.

Coleman’s biggest issue was the number of passes he dropped last year for the Bills. On top of that, the Bills benched the Florida State graduate, citing disciplinary issues. The Bills are a no-nonsense organization that does not fear cutting players who cannot contribute to the team’s offense. Diggs was at the top of his game when they decided to trade him to Houston.

The Bills’ general manager is a big believer in Keon Coleman’s potential

The owners in Buffalo may be frustrated with Coleman, but he has the backing of his teammates, including the Bills’ general manager. Beane at the pre-draft event rallied behind Coleman and explained what they would like to see from him.

Coleman won the Bills over during the pre-draft workout sessions, and Beane marked him as a top target.

He had an excellent camp. Let’s do that again. And then not, some of the things we’ve talked about…it’s the maturity, it’s the off-the-field, that can get in the way.

Beane revealed

Being part of the NFL for nearly three decades, Beane noted that many athletes lose opportunities due to off-field distractions. If Coleman can stay locked in during his third year by limiting outside interference, then he could be a solid WR1 for Allen. He should heed former NFL quarterback Cam Newton‘s warning and improve his game.

The Bills traded with the Chiefs to acquire Coleman. Meanwhile, KC drafted Texas graduate Xavier Worthy. Worthy has made 31 appearances, caught 101 passes for 1170 yards, and scored 7 touchdowns.
