The Cincinnati Bengals dropped their first preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, 34-27, at the Lincoln Financial Field. However, the game was not without any striking takeaways for the visitors.
Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow shone in the match despite having played only one quarter. Burrow completed 9 passes for 10 and threw for 123 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with the star wideout Ja’Marr Chase for one of those touchdowns, with the WR finishing the game with 4 receptions for 77 yards. Chase also played just that one particular quarter.
Although Joe Burrow self-criticized for not perfecting that initial throw, the only incompletion, social media, and several analysts have praised his form and strength.
Dan Orlovsky, a former quarterback and now a leading voice in the sports-casting industry, did a personal deep dive on the best performers in seven different traits of signal-calling.
Later on, he delved into the discussion about his thoughts on the Get Up segment on Monday. Orlovsky ranked Burrow as the best thrower in the league after last season’s antics and early signs of excellence in the preseason. He claimed that Burrow’s delivery of the ball was flawless.
Flawless. There’s no one better in the league right now throwing the football than Joe Burrow. Just absolutely flawless. I know, starters, backups, all that. The ball went exactly where it should on a consistent basis.
He also referenced the confidence Burrow exuberated with his statement on his expectations for the next season.
I heard him say he thinks he’s throwing it better right now than he has in years. He threw for 10,000 yards last season, so that would be somewhat scary for the rest of the conference.

In his other metrics, Joe Burrow was ranked seventh in arm strength and second in reaction ability. He was left out of the rushing ability while ranking first in the rest of the four metrics. These included ball placement, mechanics, decision-making with the football, and pocket presence.
The Bengals and Joe Burrow have a tough road to the postseason this year
The Cincinnati Bengals and quarterback Joe Burrow face a challenging road to the postseason in 2025, with both schedule difficulty and divisional competition set to test their resilience. Head coach Zac Taylor is taking a more aggressive preseason approach, opting to deploy Burrow and his top receivers early.

This shift reflects lessons from recent slow starts, most notably last season’s costly 1-4 opening. The absence of big stars in the preseason affected their adaptability into the season.
Cincinnati’s national profile remains high, with seven primetime games scheduled across Thursday, Sunday, and Monday nights, as well as a coveted Thanksgiving matchup. The exposure reinforces their standing as a top AFC contender, all while adding more games under intense scrutiny against high-caliber opponents.
The Bengals’ path is further complicated by what ESPN ranks as the 14th-hardest schedule in the NFL. They have key games scheduled against playoff-caliber teams like the Minnesota Vikings, Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, and Buffalo Bills, where there’s little margin for error. Their record will depend on Cincinnati’s ability to secure critical away victories and defend home turf.
Adding to the challenge, the AFC North is shaping up to be one of the most competitive divisions in football. The Ravens and Steelers have both strengthened in the offseason, while the Cleveland Browns remain an unknown threat. This means every divisional game carries heightened stakes, with playoff seeding potentially hinging on head-to-head results.
