It’s no secret that Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals have had a difficult few years. The Bengals last played in the playoffs in 2022. In the following two campaigns, Burrow injured his wrist and missed the tail end of the 2023 season.
2024 was much better on an individual level. Burrow led the league in pass completions (460), passing yards (4918), and passing touchdowns (43). The Bengals ended the year with a 9-8 record and missed the playoffs as the defense ranked near the bottom of every metric.
2025 promised a different outcome. The Bengals extended the contracts of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins so that Burrow could continue to deliver the numbers in the offense. This affected the Bengals’ spending power, leaving them vulnerable in defense.
Over 13 games, the Bengals defense has given up 50 touchdowns, the most in the league, while ranking second from bottom in average passing yards allowed (254.9) and dead last in rushing yards surrendered (155.5).
To make matters worse, Burrow suffered a turf toe injury and missed more than two months of football. The Bengals went 1-8, with their only win coming against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Burrow returned for the Week 13 bout against the Baltimore Ravens and smashed 261 yards and two touchdowns to secure a fourth win of the year. However, the Bengals lost in the ensuing week to the Buffalo Bills. Burrow threw 4 touchdown passes but also threw late interceptions while standing behind the 22nd-best offensive line in the league.
Ahead of the reverse fixture against the Ravens in Cincinnati, Burrow discussed the importance of needing to have fun if he wanted to keep playing.
Joe Burrow’s presser today felt very reflective — and at times, a bit dark:
— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) December 10, 2025
"If I want to keep doing this, I have to have fun doing it. I have been through a lot. If it's not fun, then what am I doing it for?"
Later on: "There's just a lot of things going on right now."

Football fans fear the worst for Joe Burrow following another disastrous season with the Bengals
Burrow has taken 203 sacks (fourth most) since 2020 in 73 appearances. The NFL has another Andrew Luck situation on its hands. Luck decided to walk away in his prime after taking most hits behind a lackluster Colts O-line.

If I want to keep doing this, I have to have fun doing this. I have been through a lot. If it’s not fun, then what am I doing it for? That is the mindset I am trying to bring to the table.
A dejected Joe Burrow said
The 29-year-old signed a five-year, $275 million contract extension in 2023, so he’s very much part of the Bengals’ foreseeable future. However, fans advised him to leave Cincinnati to save his career.

Even Josh Allen has to be thinking as well….he has a window right now.
Absolute dumpster fire of an organization

Bengals honestly shouldn’t be allowed to keep their team .
They waste talent constantly. And if Joe was from Athens Georgia not Athens Ohio he never would have went to Cincinnati
That’s on record
🤣🤣🤣

Get off that poverty franchise buddy that's the only way you will have fun.

Put Joe Burrow with Kyle Shanahan and see what happens

A Purdy-Burrow swap would be very similar to the Goff-Stafford trade.
Andrew Luck scenario brewing 🤔

I was having a conversation about Burrow with a guy at work today. I think he's going to leave Cincinnati one of two ways: like Andrew Luck left Indy or like Carson Palmer left Cincinnati.

Damn he’s starting to sound like Andrew Luck…

Former Steelers DB Ryan Clark foreshadowed Burrow’s struggles during the preseason. Clark showed zero confidence in the defense and declared that the Bengals have to score 40 points in every game to have a chance of winning.
When you watch this in the preseason, you have to be sick to your stomach. Because you know there’s going to be some games where you sit in the post-game press conference, that you scored 35, 38, maybe 41, and you still catch an L.
Ryan Clark said on Get Up in August
.@Realrclark25 is concerned the Bengals are "wasting this stage of Joe Burrow's career" 😯 pic.twitter.com/fL3OCuiYg1

Burrow won’t replicate his tally from last year, but he can still help the Bengals end the season on a high note. Besides the Ravens, the Bengals play the 6-7 Miami Dolphins, the 3-10 Arizona Cardinals, and the 3-10 Cleveland Browns.
