Last season, the Cincinnati Bengals failed to make key roster upgrades, which led to early struggles. midseason, their shortcomings became even more apparent as they dropped three straight games. As a result, Joe Burrow and his team found themselves fighting an uphill battle in their playoff pursuit.

Those last five straight wins saw them inch closer to a playoff berth. But to make it, they needed other AFC teams to lose their remaining games if they had to end up in the 7th spot. However, a win for the Denver Broncos over a Patrick Mahomes and his starting teammates less Chiefs sealed their fate.

Naturally, Joe Burrow and his teammates were dejected. The superstar quarterback had one of his best seasons, but despite all that effort, could not make it work. However, ESPN analyst Chris Canty believes it is because Burrow isn’t as good as advertised.

He’s not an elite quarterback. We’ve got to get out of this thing where we want to anoint everybody an elite quarterback. I’m just saying we can’t give the runner-up to the runner-up to the runner-up elite quarterback status.

His belief is that Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson have proved with their accolades that they are the best in the league. Burrow has none of the accolades that help validate the claim several media members do that he is elite.

Chris Canty believes one Super Bowl appearance does not make Joe Burrow ‘elite’

Chris Canty is not the only one to have talked about Joe Burrow in this manner. The likes of Shannon Sharpe have also been critical about the former LSU star’s struggles this past season. Canty summed it up with an analogy about Burrow’s one Super Bowl appearance.

Joe Burrow’s claim to fame is once upon a time, four years ago, beat Patrick Mahomes in a playoff game on his way to losing the Super Bowl. I’m sorry that doesn’t give you elite status.

Chris Canty said

The former Super Bowl champion believes that one win over Mahomes is Joe Burrow’s only claim to fame. Other than that, he hasn’t shown yet that he is an ‘elite’ quarterback. As in, he hasn’t led his Cincinnati Bengals to the promised land.

Moreover, Canty believes Burrow has elite teammates that help him achieve unreal numbers. In contrast, the likes of Mahomes, Jackson and Allen have proved time and again that they can do more with less. Therefore, he isn’t ready to anoint Joe Burrow ‘elite’ yet.
