The Cincinnati Bengals had high hopes heading into the season. Joe Burrow was in the best shape of his career, playing in the preseason games in the hopes of avoiding a slow start to the season. He was touted to become the best, to champion the Bengals to glory, but all was lost when he scrambled and limped into the sidelines in agony.

In the second week against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Burrow sustained a turf toe injury following a sack in the second quarter. The turf toe injury happens when there’s a strain or a tear of the soft tissues and ligaments around the big toe joint. In most circumstances, the Rest-Ice-Compression-Elevation method works, but what Burrow underwent was so severe that he had to undergo surgery to repair it.

According to the latest update, Burrow has successfully undergone the surgery. However, he is not expected to be back in the field for at least three months, shattering his dream of leading his team to a playoff after missing it two years in a row. It’s a painful feeling to have.

Joe Burrow penned an emotional post in the aftermath of the surgery, one that was quite heartbreaking for his fans as well. In the carousel post with three dreary shots of him, Burrow captioned, “This game will break your heart. See you soon.”

Burrow has had a long history of injuries. As a rookie in 2020, he tore his ACL, MCL, and PCL in one brutal moment that would’ve ended many young quarterbacks’ dreams. The following years brought no mercy.

In 2021, he played through a dislocated pinky and an MCL sprain on the sport’s biggest stage, the Super Bowl. A calf strain slowed him in 2023’s camp, only for a torn wrist ligament to cut that season short in Week 10. This year was supposed to be his redemption, but fate had a different prompt.

In the absence of Joe Burrow, the Bengals plan to make additions ahead of Week 4 action

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cincinnati Bengals plan to sign Sean Clifford and Mike White to their practice squad on Tuesday. The Bengals will be once again led by Jake Browning in the Week 4 against the Denver Broncos on Monday.

Browning has already shown promise, completing 21 of 32 passes for 241 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions in a comeback win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, he was limited against the Minnesota Vikings, who railroaded the Bengals into a 48-10 defeat.

Browning will be backed up by Brett Rypien, who is considered a solid backup with poised play during his limited playtime. Rypien was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Broncos in 2019, against whom Rypien may play a few snaps. In addition to Browning and Rypien, the Bengals are planning to add two more quarterbacks to support the QB room in the absence of Joe Burrow while deliberating on what lies ahead.

Sean Clifford, 27, was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He spent just over two seasons with the Packers but never appeared in a regular-season game. Meanwhile, Mike White, 30, brings more professional experience. Drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round in 2018, White made his first NFL start in 2021 with the New York Jets, leading them to a surprise win over the Bengals.
