It is true that the Cincinnati Bengals have a reputation of starting their NFL seasons on a horrible note. After losing their first two, Joe Burrow and his teammates were expected to turn things around against the upstart Washington Commanders. But fans were in for a surprise as rookie QB Jayden Daniels led his teammates to put up a fight against their heavily favored opponents.
In that fight, the Bengals found themselves down 5 with almost the entire fourth quarter left to play. Knowing that every point matters, they decided to go for a 2-point attempt to narrow that deficit. Joe Burrow took the snap and threw it to returning star wideout Tee Higgins. The ball bounced off of Higgins’ left hand as he could not use his right hand to grab it. Replays showed that Commanders safety Jeremy Chinn pulled Higgins’ right arm causing that missed catch.
It was not just the Cincinnati Bengals fans who were dismayed as Burrow showed his frustrations at the referees for not throwing a flag on that very visible pass interference. At that point, it felt as if the officials had not only robbed the Bengals of those 2 points but also a possible 1 extra point from a field goal. In tight games, especially with Burrow leading his team back, every point matters.
They rallied back against the Commanders in the 2nd half to close the gap. Had that 2-point conversion worked out as intended, the Bengals could have forced the Commanders into a turnover. But in the end, that gap stayed at those five points and marked a convincing 38-33 win for the upstarts in Washington. The Bengals, on the other hand, are now faced with a mountain to climb.
Jayden Daniels and Commanders script famous win over Joe Burrow and Bengals
When Jayden Daniels came into the league, many considered him as a quarterback with a bright future. He did not initially come in with the hype of 1st overall pick Caleb Williams. But as their final college season went about, Daniels kept making his point. The Washington Commanders drafted him based on those credentials.
Heading into his rookie season, he won the starting job convincingly and was expected to lead the team. If his first game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought in any doubts, the second game never added much. But tonight, he proved to the NFL world what his abilities are. For starters, he is a dual threat quarterback, so running into the end zone is standard for him. He did accomplish that, but it was not the standout part.
His two passing touchdowns over what would seem like an elite Bengals defense made a statement. For him to do it against one of his alma mater’s greats in Burrow, was the icing on the cake. Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders have only one place to go from here- up.
