Joe Burrow and the Bengals’ first drive against the Eagles was ten minutes long, which ended in a two-yard touchdown for Ja’Marr Chase. Zac Taylor’s bad reputation for clock management showed on every move they made throughout the game, and untimely turnovers did not help their cause either.

Following Chase’s first-quarter strike, the Eagles took control of the game. Quarterback Jalen Hurts was involved in three touchdowns on either side of the halftime whistle. The Bengals, on the other hand, only managed to squeeze in a 27-yard field goal from Evan McPherson.

Burrow, meanwhile, threw a wayward interception (only the third of the season, but it proved critical) early in the fourth quarter.

If we go down and score a touchdown on that drive then we’re down three, we’re still in it. The interception was tough—guy made a good play, I left it a little short.

It took the Bengals more than one hour of football to score another six points as running back Chase Brown bundled in from four yards. However, the Bengals defense, as so often has been the case this season, turned to Swiss cheese just a couple of minutes later.

Hurts launched a deep ball, aiming for a completely open DeVonta Smith roaming inside the Bengals endzone. Whatever the chances the Bengals had of a comeback diminished instantly. The game ended 37-17, and the Bengals are now 3-5 after eight weeks of football.

Even though the postseason qualification looks bleak, Burrow has figured out the correct amount of wins they need to get for wild cards.

I think 10 wins usually gets you in (to the postseason)… So, we gotta win 7 out of 9. That’s doable.

It’s only going to get tougher for Joe Burrow and Bengals

Even though Burrow’s confidence level remains unshaken, the reality of the Bengals season is quite different. They have several tough fixtures remaining from here on out.

Barring the Raiders, who can’t seem to win anything, Burrow has to play against the Ravens, Chargers, Steelers, and Cowboys before facing the Titans and the Browns.

We put ourselves in a bad spot, but it’s not a spot that we can’t get ourselves out of… We’re not even yet at the halfway point in the season, and so there’s gonna be a lot of opportunity here.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said

First and foremost, he needs to fix the defense. The Bengals concede 353.1 yards on average every game and have allowed 20 touchdowns.

Taylor’s side has the 27th-worst red zone defense, allowing 68.2% of deep balls to turn into touchdowns. If the trajectory remains the same, then no matter how well Burrow and Chase play, they will not be able to win games.
