Football may be a team game, but the quarterback has to shoulder the majority of the blame for losing a fixture. Joe Burrow is currently going through that phase even though he has been exceptional.

Several analysts blamed the fifth-year starter as the Bengals find themselves 1-4, mixed with the bottom of the pile in the AFC. However, contrary to the consensus, the 27-year-old carried through his end of the bargain masterfully.

Burrow has thrown for 1,370 yards and a league-high 12 touchdowns while completing 72.3% of his passes, good for a 113.6 passer rating, in the first five weeks of the 2024 season for the Cincinnati Bengals. Weeks 4 and 5 hurt the most.

On both occasions, the Bengals dominated their opponents but weren’t able to hold onto their lead. Burrow did throw a crucial interception in the fourth quarter against the Ravens, which forced extra time, but they became complacent as Zac Taylor switched to gaining short yardage instead of a touchdown. Evan McPherson’s field goal miss gave the Ravens Derrick Henry to secure the win.

The Washington game was a nail-biter, but if the defense had stood firm, then the Bengals had a lopsided win in their hands. While Jayden Daniels had a career-defining game in Cincinnati, Burrow also threw for 324 yards and three touchdowns and ate all the blame.

This is the Bengals’ worst start to an NFL season for the first time since Burrow took over as their quarterback. Meanwhile, the Cincinnati offense ranks fifth in the NFL in passing yards (263.0) and points (28.0) per game. When asked what changes the Bengals need to become a championship-caliber team, Joe Burrow replied,

Everything.

In Week 6, the Bengals travel to the Big Apple and play against the New York Giants, hoping to bounce back. It’s too early to call the sixth game of the season a must-win, but in terms of regaining confidence, a victory will surely help.

I know we can. Whether we do or not is to be determined, but I know based on the players we have in there and the coaches we have up there, we can get to where we want to. It’s just a matter of doing it.

Joe Burrow said

Burrow has never played against the Giants in his NFL career. The last time the Bengals played the New Yorkers was back in 2020 when they lost 17-19, with quarterback Daniel Jones completing 16 of 27 for 239 yards.
