In Short
  • Jaylen Brown was ejected in the second quarter for receiving two technical fouls during a game against the Spurs.
  • The Celtics lost 125-116, marking their first defeat since Jayson Tatum's return.
  • Head coach Joe Mazzulla's unusual response to Brown's ejection has gone viral, drawing attention to the officiating controversy.

Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown was at the center of attention as he was ejected in the second quarter after getting hit with two technical fouls for arguing a non-call. It was a huge clash between two in-form teams as the Boston Celtics took on the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night. After a neck-to-neck first half, the Spurs registered a 125-116 victory at the Frost Bank Center.

The win extended Spurs’ winning streak to five games as they sit at second place in the Western Conference standings with a 48-17 record and are just 2.5 games behind Oklahoma City Thunder.

Meanwhile, the Celtics lost their first game since Jayson Tatum‘s return. Their record dropped to 43-22, and they are currently placed second in the Eastern Conference standings.

Jaylen Brown has been one of the star performers this season. Leading the Celtics with his impressive performances, Brown earned his way into the MVP conversation this season.

The Celtics have been one of the biggest surprises of the 2025-26 campaign. With Tatum ruled out for the majority of the season and with the trades of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, the Celtics had broken up their 2024 NBA Championship-winning roster. Hence, many predicted that the Celtics would at best be a play-in team this year.

But to everyone’s surprise, that has not been the case. Led by Jaylen Brown, the Celtics sit in second place in the Eastern Conference standings. Now with Tatum back on the court, the Celtics will be optimistic about their chances in a wide-open Eastern Conference.

After their loss to the Spurs, head coach Joe Mazzulla was asked about Brown’s ejection in the second quarter. Mazzulla responded:

I just give a ton of credit to my high school principal. He had the balls to throw a student out. He didn’t leave it to the hall monitor

It was an unusual response but a subtle one. It was a shot at Ford, the principal in this scenario, and Mehta, the hall monitor.

With Brown gaining the plaudits, Mazzulla deserves his praises as well. It was never going to be easy to coach a new squad without their primary scorer. But he has done a fine job this season and deserves to a contender for Coach of the Year.

Jaylen Brown lost his cool and charged at the referee

While Spurs won the match, the main story for some was the ejection of Jaylen Brown, which left fans, teammates, and even the commentary booth in a state of disbelief. It was Brown’s second ejection of his career.

There has been a lot of criticism of the referees’ inconsistent foul calling. It has been a concern for the NBA for a while now. It all happened in the second quarter. The ejection was triggered by what happened near the sideline.

Brown was driving hard against Stephon Castle when he appeared to be physically shoved out of bounds. Instead of a whistle against the defense, the officials ruled it a turnover on Boston, awarding the ball to the Spurs. The Celtics forward was left visibly unhappy with the decision and went crazy at the official who gave him his first technical foul.

The 29-year-old did not cool down and let his frustration get the better of him and he was given a second technical, resulting in an ejection. He tried to charge at the security before being pulled back by his staff before exiting into the locker room. Brown ended his night on eight points, two rebounds and seven assists in under 15 minutes.

Jayson Tatum on Jaylen Brown’s rejection

It is good to see Jayson Tatum back on the court. He has played the last three games for the Celtics and is slowly finding his top condition. Against the Spurs, he recorded 24 points and five rebounds. But even the Celtics star was left unhappy with Brown’s ejection.

In his post-match interview, Tatum called out the hypocrisy from the league.

The NBA makes a big deal about prime time games and stars playing and being available. The first tech was probably warranted, emotions are high. But the second tech, you gotta understand that it’s a national TV game, two of the best teams in the league, and you make a big deal about stars playing, and you get trigger-happy to throw somebody out of the game. I disagree with it.

Brown was fined $35,000 for criticizing officials after their last loss to the Spurs at the TD Garden. But this time, the second technical foul could be deemed as unfair.
