“How many Christians?” Joe Mazzulla stumps reporters after joining Jason Kidd to become first Black HCs to coach NBA Finals since 1975

The Boston Celtics’ head coach Joe Mazzulla has always been known for his awkward pressers and unintentionally funny moments. Ahead of Game 2 of the 2024 NBA Finals between the Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks, Mazzulla was involved in yet another awkward situation in the pre-match press conference.

When questioned about the significance of Jason Kidd and himself being the first pair of Black HCs in the NBA Finals since 1975, Mazzulla questioned the reporters back regarding “how many Christian” coaches had coached in the NBA Finals. This question by Mazzulla left the room completely silent. Among the key and sensitive topics in the NBA is race and the Celtics HC decided to throw back one at the press.

I wonder how many of those have been Christian coaches.

Interestingly, he didn’t go into detail about what the question was intended for in that particular situation. Although Mazzulla brought up “Christianity” in the press conference, he chose not to participate in further discussion on the topic.

Previously, Mazzulla and his Celtics side outclassed the Mavs in Game 1 of the 2024 NBA Finals. They are currently leading the series 1-0.

Joe Mazzulla opens up on bond with Pep Guardiola ahead of Game 2

Legendary soccer manager Pep Guardiola was in attendance for the 2024 NBA Finals Game 1 between the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks. Notably, Guardiola and Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla share a strong bond off the court and were also spotted talking to each other at TD Garden. Mazzulla opened up on his bond with Guardiola ahead of Game 2 in the pre-match press conference.

We've known each other for a little over a year and a half. I've always just admired him and wanted to learn about him because of how he carried himself ... He is a high character guy and I just appreciate our relationship, it's made me a lot better. I think the way he lives his life and builds his craft, that speaks for itself.

Earlier this year, Mazzulla had visited Pep Guardiola and his English soccer side, Manchester City FC in England. This speaks volumes about the respect and admiration Mazzulla possesses for Guardiola, and soccer in general. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen now how Mazzulla’s side will perform in the remainder of the NBA Finals.
