With all the spotlight on Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley as the leading running backs in the league, fans often overlook Joe Mixon’s stunning performances. Mixon pulled out all the stops on Monday when he traveled to Arlington with the Houston Texans to play against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Texans were massive favorites to secure a win as the Cowboys suffered through several injuries and had only won three games all year. Mixon went off in the game, carrying the ball 20 times for 109 yards and three touchdowns and receiving two passes for 44 yards.

The game ended 34-10 and with the win; the Texans took control of the AFC South with a 7-4 record. Mixon’s match-winning performances in Houston raised question marks about his former employers, the Cincinnati Bengals’, considering they are 4-7 after losing to the Chargers on Sunday.

The 28-year-old spent seven seasons with the Bengals and wanted to stick around longer, but they refused to meet his demands, which forced his hands to look for a different home. His search landed him in Houston behind 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year CJ Stroud.

Mixon, after arriving in Houston, formed a great partnership with Stroud. He rushed 171 times for 764 yards (4.47 yards per average) and 10 touchdowns. Many believe letting Mixon leave was a terrible move from the Bengals in exchange for a mere seventh-round pick.

Joe Mixon joined the Texans in March, signing a $13 million guaranteed with a $6 million signing bonus and each of the first two years of the pact totally guaranteed. Not only did he win over the Texans hierarchy, but he was also named one of the captains of the team after just six games.

The former second-round pick said the city, and the fans welcomed him with open arms, which raised the confidence levels in him.

I’m just always playing with a lot of juice, a lot of energy. My main thing is I feed off the crowd. I feed off my teammates.

Mixon became only the fifth running back in NFL history to rush for 100 yards and a touchdown in five of their first six games of a season. He is in an elite company with the likes of Jim Brown, OJ Simpson, Emmitt Smith, and DeMarco Murray.

The Oklahoma graduate is on pace to become the first Texans running back since Carlos Hyde in 2019 to cross the 1000 rushing yards threshold. He will have several opportunities to reach the goal, which will begin with back-to-back fixtures against divisional rivals the Tennessee Titans (2-8) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2-9).
