Joe Montana has four Super Bowl rings and enough experience to talk about quarterbacks. In a league where Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and others continue the legacy of that position, they strive to win games and entertain fans at the same time.

The latter is just an outcome of the evolution of athletes over the past couple of decades. Nowadays, quarterbacks are known to take incredible risks, some of which the likes of Montana would never attempt during his time.

Admittedly, NFL defenses were a lot more physical and aggressive back then, which would have placed these QBs at risk of getting injured. But even with the relaxed rules, current-gen quarterbacks have displayed that they are willing to do a lot more than before.

Jackson generally is a cheat code on the field, while Mahomes dazzles with his incredible passing array. Allen put on a show last season on his way to winning his first MVP award. So do the likes of Joe Burrow and the next generation of dynamic QBs.

However, only a few are excellent at carrying their respective teams to the ultimate goal. When former HC Bruce Arians asked the 49ers legend, while on the Pat McAfee Show, which QBs he would start a franchise with, he replied:

I’m taking the guy in Buffalo, Josh. Joe Burrow is another guy that I like. Believe it or not, I like the guy with the Chargers. I just like the way those 3 guys are. I do also like the guy in Philly, though.

Joe Montana replied

To put it short, the 2-time league MVP went with Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Justin Herbert as his top quarterbacks. Then he added reigning Super Bowl champion Jalen Hurts to the mix.

Fans fume as Joe Montana leaves out Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes

Football fans usually are very sensitive when an analyst or former player ignores their team’s quarterback, especially when he is good enough. In this scenario, the entire football community rallied to condemn Joe Montana.

They believe he was being borderline racist in his picks, ignoring arguably the two best quarterbacks, who both happen to be Black. Even if he was to ignore Lamar Jackson for not winning a Super Bowl, fans questioned how the 49ers great could ignore Patrick Mahomes.

He won 3 rings and could have had 3 more. Moreover, aside from the soon-to-retire Aaron Rodgers and Josh Allen’s latest win, both Jackson and Mahomes have held the last four league MVP awards, which speaks of their value to a franchise.

Fans believe this was as biased a racial take as any other former player or analyst has done over the past several years. Check out examples of those fan reactions below:

Before Joe Montana mentioned his picks, host Pat McAfee advised him not to pick Brock Purdy, due to his understandable bias towards the San Francisco 49ers. Had he picked Purdy, it is possible that the current anger could have been worse.

Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs’ 4th straight Super Bowl appearance could face a serious obstacle

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs went to their third straight Super Bowl last season. Other than the controversial circumstances in which they won their Divisional Round tie against the Houston Texans, they were pretty much a sure-headed playoff team.

After their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Chiefs’ roster is hungry to make amends and go for a 4th straight run to fight for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Former QB and current analyst Chris Simms does not believe it will happen.

I think this is the year the Denver Broncos upset the Chiefs and win the AFC West. Sean Payton, the team they have, the QB, all of it. The Chiefs they are amazing, and I am scared to doubt them. But I’m just like, hey, how many years can they climb to the top of the mountain and do all that?

Chris Simms said on Up & Adams

Chris Simms knows his prediction largely depends on how the Chiefs play through the season. If they struggle, then this matchup might not happen. But he knows that they are good enough to reach the Super Bowl and will need a herculean effort from others to stop them.
