UFC commentator Joe Rogan has taken a liking to many fighters over his long years. Longtime reigning UC 155-pound king Islam Makhachev is the latest of those. Is Islam Makhachev the greatest lightweight in UFC competition? After UFC 311 PPV, he’s got the stats working in his favor as well. But for a brief moment, Rogan was doubting Makhachev’s standing in his last title affair.

Lightweight veteran Renato Moicanowho subbed in instead of Arman Tsarukyan – gave Makhachev a scare. Makhachev, prone to go crisp with standup and chain-up singles, did just that. He closed with a body kick and a clean left, but “Money” Moicano answered and connected! To Joe Rogan and Co. commentators, it looked like he connected big and knocked him down.

Now, …they didn’t used to have monitors in the early days… We’re like we should be able to show them stuff in the replay that the crowd is seeing, cuz, sometimes you think a guy got knocked down…That fight with Islam Makhachev and, uh Moicano. Moicano caught him with a right hand…but really what happened is he kind of hit him in like the shoulder and and they tripped legs together and Islam fell down. And then Islam got – we thought he was hurt – so if you were judging that if you saw the replay – [like] – ‘oh he didn’t Rock him he just slipped’…

As it turns out, he didn’t. Islam Makhachev defeated the short-notice challenge via (D’Arce choke) – Round 1, 4:05 – to defend his undisputed gold. The rest, as one says, is history after UFC 311. He has now surpassed mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov, Benson Henderson, and B.J. Penn for the most title defenses in divisional history. His title fight wins [5] is also the highest.

However, Rogan said this is exactly and adequately why a three-prong objective scoring happens in UFC/MMA. It is so that prime performances do not get marred by what commentators like him or Daniel Cormier think is happening. Also, different monitor POVs help. Now, more than ever, he lauds the sequence, the win, and Makhachev all over, not the first fighter he has done that about.

The times Joe Rogan couldn’t resist fanboying over a UFC Fighter and got the fanfare going right

UFC color commentator Joe Rogan often goes viral for his overtly animated reactions. That, and a bias over particular sequences have often landed too strong for Rogan. Not all were lucky and dominant like the dominant Islam Makhachev. Rogan thus often catches flak for what fans have billed as commentary bias. However, sometimes, when it landed right, his commentary on particular fighters fit well.

During a JRE Fight Companion episode with Brian Simpson, Tony Hinchcliffe, and Brendan Schaub, Rogan pitched in on Alex Pereira vs. Dricus Du Plessis. Pereira had a unique year with multiple KOTY contenders.

DDP challenged that instead of him coming down, he’d go up to 205 and dethrone him with his wild striking clinic. Contractually, Rogan primarily does domestic UFC pay-per-views (PPVs), not Fight Night or overseas scraps. But for this, he was willing to fly to space to commentate!

On episode #137 of the JRE MMA Show in 2023, Joe Rogan lauded Conor McGregor’s 13-second KO over Jose Aldo. Rogan praised how “Notorious” feinted and baited Aldo. He executed his counter left-hand KO and Rogan was rightfully proud of it.

Rogan’s “Conqueror” monolog about GOAT Jon Jones from JRE’s episode #1956 seemed a stage plant (verbatim from fans). Jones only shifted up and defeated Ciryl Gane once ex-UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou wasn’t there. But defeat him he did, and how!

“Bones” proved that just like a light heavyweight, he is still “Jones” here, too. The ‘GOAT’ defeated Stipe Miocic and is now 2-0 in the weight class. Ilia Topuria and Makhachev are the latest names Rogan does the same about
