In Short
  • UFC Freedom Fights 250, set on the White House lawn, faces criticism for its underwhelming fight card and logistical challenges.
  • Joe Rogan labeled the event a "gimmick" and raised concerns about security and weather conditions affecting the fighters.
  • Despite ambitious plans, including a proposed 100,000-seat stadium, many UFC stars dismissed the event as unrealistic and lacking marquee matchups.

The upcoming White House card, now branded UFC Freedom Fights 250, stands as one of the most ambitious events in UFC history. Conceived by UFC CEO Dana White and Donald Trump, it aims to deliver a landmark spectacle. While the initial card reveal has been viewed as underwhelming, anticipation remains. However, UFC commentator Joe Rogan has explained why the concept may not be practical.

The event is set to take place on the South Lawn of the White House, with space for 5,000 spectators positioned around the Octagon. Fighters are expected to make their walkouts directly from the Oval Office, adding to the event’s unique presentation. In addition, plans include approximately 85,000 seats arranged around the Ellipse, where fans can follow the action on jumbotron screens all around the venue.

However, White’s official card announcement during UFC 326 drew backlash, as fans anticipated the returns of superstars like Jon Jones and Conor McGregor. Instead, only a lightweight title unification bout between Justin Gaethje and Ilia Topuria, along with an interim title fight between Ciryl Gane and Alex Pereira, drew fans’ attention. This led Rogan to discuss the event with popular comedian Mark Normand.

It’s kind of a gimmick… It’s just going to be a security nightmare. You’re on the White House lawn. Also, they’re fighting outside. What if it rains? What if it’s hot?… June in D.C. can get pretty warm. That affects fighters. I think Jasmine Crockett whips them all… She pulls a wig off, stuffs it in your mouth. You can’t breathe.

President Trump set ambitious predictions for the June 14th event, including six to seven title fights. While hardcore MMA fans knew this was unrealistic, many still expected more marquee superstars. Trump also proposed a 100,000-seat stadium around the South Lawn, which would have created extreme logistical challenges. With limited time until the event, such a setup was considered unsafe to execute.

However, many UFC superstars have dismissed the event as little more than a gimmick. One of the most vocal was controversial middleweight Sean Strickland, who criticized fighting in an arena not designed for fans. Other fighters sharing this view included Brandon Royval and Brandon Moreno. Even former welterweight champion Belal Muhammad voiced heavy criticism of the collaborative White House event.

UFC Freedom Fights 250 was considered underwhelming, partly due to the high anticipation surrounding the event. The budget neared $60 million, nearly $40 million more than the most expensive UFC event at The Sphere in Las Vegas. Despite the historic setting, the limited marquee card and logistical challenges left many fans feeling it fell short. Joe Rogan’s comments emphasized the gap between ambition and execution.

Joe Rogan reveals what could save the UFC White House event

There have been major questions about who could challenge Alexander Volkanovski at featherweight, particularly after his commanding performance at UFC 325, where he secured a unanimous decision win over Diego Lopes in their rematch. ‘Volk’s dominance in that fight reinforced his position as the division’s top fighter. However, the question of a credible challenger was recently addressed at UFC London.

UFC London featured a battle of undefeated featherweight contenders, where Movsar Evloev defeated Lerone Murphy by majority decision. The win solidified Evloev’s claim as a top contender and positioned him as a potential challenger to Volkanovski. As the UFC Freedom Fights 250 White House event faces growing criticism, Joe Rogan has proposed featuring a featherweight showdown at the June 14th card.

White House lawn, let’s go. Give [Evloev] a couple of months off. We’re only in March. It’s in June. Come on. Spice that card up, baby!

It remains to be seen whether Joe Rogan’s request will be considered by Dana White, who had hinted at a possible seventh fight on the UFC Freedom Fights 250 card. Rogan recently indicated that his ideas are no longer being taken into account by the promotion, suggesting a shift in his relationship with the UFC. This highlights tensions between the commentator’s input and the organization’s final matchmaking decisions.
