The UFC has witnessed numerous dominant runs over the years, with legendary champions etching their names into history through remarkable streaks of victories. From Anderson Silva’s 16 wins in a row to Khabib Nurmagomedov’s 29-0 dominance, the sport has never lacked iconic winning runs that defined eras. Now, Ilia Topuria’s dominant title reign has drawn praise from UFC commentator Joe Rogan.

Recently, Rogan weighed in on ‘El Matador’s rapid ascent, framing his streak of 17-0 as something truly historic. His comments elevated Topuria’s achievements to a special category, distinct from the usual statistical discussions surrounding winning streaks.

In a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, the UFC commentator explained his stance by reflecting on how Topuria’s knockout of Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298 to claim the featherweight title was only the beginning of a remarkable sequence.

He followed that with a statement knockout over former champion Max Holloway (his career first), before dismantling ex-lightweight king Charles Oliveira at UFC 317. Many have called this the greatest 3-win streak in the history of MMA, including Rogan.

Dude to go from knocking out Volkanovski to knocking out Holloway to knocking out Oliveira, that is the greatest three-fight win streak of all time. It’s just KOs, it’s just flatlines. That’s different.

Meanwhile, Topuria and former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev have engaged in a highly charged rivalry. The Dagestani native who vacated the lightweight belt has since expressed intrigue in a superfight with Topuria. However, he is set to fight Jack Della Maddalena for the welterweight title at UFC 322, which has prolonged the Topuria superfight.

Rogan has always spoken highly of Topuria’s skills. He admired the Spaniard’s striking mechanics, efficiency, and overall composure, comparing his technique to the very best athletes in combat sports. Rogan had also ranked Topuria among the elite in the pound-for-pound conversation and signaled that his rise was destined to stand out even before the championship victories arrived.

With his 155lbs reign still in its early stages and his rivalry with Makhachev intensifying, there is no doubt that Topuria will continue to perform on the biggest stage.

The UFC commentator offered a strong endorsement of the matchup and spoke about the direction he would take as a matchmaker. He emphasized that the fight to make is Makhachev versus Topuria. He acknowledged that other contenders, such as Della Maddalena, are exciting in their own right, but pointed out that none carry the magnitude or legacy-defining stakes of a showdown between two.

Bring Islam back. I think that’s the fight. If I’m the matchmaker, I’m calling Islam and saying, ‘JDM is fun and everything, but c’mon!’ Call him up and ask if there’s a number. Let’s go to Spain.
