A potential meeting between marquee champions from different divisional lineages has increasingly been positioned as one of the most commercially and historically significant hypothetical events in contemporary mixed martial arts. A fight between Alex Pereira and Jon Jones will prove to be precisely that, according to UFC commentator and podcaster Joe Rogan.
Pereira put on a dominant performance at UFC 320, where he knocked out Magomed Ankalaev in the first round of their rematch. The fight promoted Pereira to a three-time UFC champion after he lost the belt to Ankalaev at UFC 313. After his performance at UFC 320, ‘Poatan’ was set to call out Jones for a superfight, but avoided the thought and instead observed a minute for his brother Arthur Jones.
However, in the UFC 320 post-fight press conference, Pereira highlighted that the original plan was to call out Jones for a super fight at the UFC White House event in 2026. There have been many debates regarding the sheer scale and measure of this fight. According to Rogan, however, the upcoming White House event served as the best location for the potential matchup between Jones and Pereira.
The big money fight is Alex vs Jon Jones at the White House. Make it catchweight, make it 225. It does not have to be for a title, make it for the BMF upper edition or something. The Jon Jones-Alex Pereira fight will probably be the biggest fight in human history. As a matchup, you have the greatest of all time against arguably the most destructive fighter that has ever competed.

Jones, once the UFC heavyweight champion, announced his retirement from mixed martial arts in June 2025, relinquishing the title. Before his retirement, Jones had a storied career, with a record of 28 wins and one loss. His tenure as light heavyweight champion was widely regarded as one of the most dominant in UFC history, featuring victories over multiple former champions.
A matchup between the two was almost on the cards before Jones’ unexpected retirement. Every MMA analyst had considered this matchup to happen at some point. However, anticipation started building majorly after the two faced off at an event. At the same time, it was a friendly interaction, and speculations had begun to build regarding a potential matchup between the two.
Jones has been vocal regarding a spot at the White House event to cement his legacy further. However, Dana White believed that Jon Jones’ track record showed that he was not bankable enough for such an important card. Joe Rogan’s comments not only highlighted Jon Jones’ greatness but also acknowledged Alex Pereira’s impact on the UFC in such a short amount of time.
Chael Sonnen talks about Alex Pereira vs Jon Jones
The prospect of Alex Pereira facing Jon Jones has resurfaced within MMA discourse as analysts and former fighters examine pathways that could convert the matchup from speculation to reality. Jones is a retired two-division UFC champion, and Pereira is an active champion who captured belts at middleweight and light heavyweight within an unusually compressed career window.

UFC veteran Chael Sonnen has put forward a structural blueprint designed to make the fight materially viable rather than aspirational, focusing on altering the incentive structure around Jones rather than on technical breakdowns. Jones’ retirement and title relinquishment removed championship stakes from any hypothetical return, which historically reduces activation likelihood for dominant ex-champions.
If I’m in Jon Jones’s shoes and I hear this and I feel this buzz, there’s this huge fight and it has all of a sudden got my interest, but there’s no title on the line. I can fix that. Real fight — I can say I can fight you and I’ll even find a world title because it’s gonna be yours. I’ll see you at 205 pounds.

The UFC historically stages cross-division super-fights only when both contractual status and medical clearance are settled, and neither has been initiated for this matchup. As of now, no negotiations, bout agreements, or regulatory filings exist for Alex Pereira vs Jon Jones, making the fight speculative despite continued high-level discussion around its scale and feasibility.
