Dana White promised that UFC 300 would give fans what they wanted. The fighters have done their best to live up to the expectations. Even though Alex Pereira vs. Jamahal Hill was the main event, Max Holloway vs. Justin Gaethje was declared the people’s main event. The BMF lightweight fight delivered an iconic moment, and it made Joe Rogan do the unthinkable.
Holloway became the first fighter to knock Justin Gaethje out cold at UFC 300. Gaethje has lost via submission and TKO before. However, no one had knocked Gaethje out unconscious with a single punch. Holloway had earlier become the first fighter to one-punch knockout The Korean Zombie at UFC Singapore. Due to the excitement, Rogan even cussed on a live ESPN broadcast.

It was absolute pandemonium when the knockout happened, particularly in the commentary booth as Joe Rogan, Daniel Cormier, and Jon Anik went wild. Even though the trio have seen devastating knockouts, the sight of Justin Gaethje out cold was difficult to fathom. Most of the UFC fighters in attendance had a shocking reaction.
The face of Ilia Topuria, the UFC featherweight champion, can attest to that. Topuria had earlier stated that he wouldn’t give a title shot to Holloway at featherweight. Nonetheless, after the victory, Holloway called out both Topuria and Islam Makhachev for future title fights.
The spinning back-kick that changed the course of the fight
Justin Gaethje was a significant betting favorite against Max Holloway. However, Holloway fought like the odds did not matter. The first round began with Holloway utilizing his boxing and Gaethje using his leg kicks. However, in the final second of the first round, Holloway landed a spinning back kick on Gaethje.
The heel of Holloway’s right leg hit Gaethje’s nose and broke it. Blood poured out of Gaethje’s nose, but the cutman did an impressive job. However, the broken nose affected Gaethje’s cardio as he had to breathe through his mouth. Moreover, even a jab by Holloway on Gaethje’s face affected the BMF champion.
In addition to the broken nose, Gaethje also fought through a couple of eye pokes from Holloway. Gaethje also showed signs of improvement in rounds 4 and 5. In round 4, Gaethje even became the first fighter to score a knockdown on Holloway. Nonetheless, he fell victim to what Holloway does best – stand in the middle and trade. Like the Korean Zombie before him, Gaethje fell like a cut-down tree.
