UFC commentator Joe Rogan hosts one of the most popular podcasts in the world. Recently, during an episode of his show, Rogan invited Chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen. However, their conversation took an interesting turn, focusing on renowned boxer Canelo Alvarez, particularly one of the Mexican boxing sensation’s hobbies.

Canelo Alvarez is currently the multiple title holder (WBA, WBC, WBO, The Ring) in the super middleweight boxing division. In addition to his impressive boxing career, Canelo often plays golf as a hobby. Interestingly, UFC commentator Joe Rogan believes that the Mexican boxing superstar remains obsessed with this “Gentleman’s Game.”

They say that’s ruining Canelo Alvarez, you know, there’s been a lot of criticism in the boxing world and particularly you know like some of his promoters and things along those lines where they have criticized his. He’s obsessive, he plays everyday, even when he is in camp.

Interestingly, this isn’t the only time Alvarez has faced criticism for his excessive time spent playing golf. Before Rogan, it was his former promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, who criticized the Mexican superstar for the same issue. Despite that, Canelo has continued to stay relevant through his impressive boxing performances.

Most recently, he defeated Puerto Rican-born boxer Edgar Berlanga via unanimous decision. Currently, Canelo is scheduled for several exciting matchups.

The boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh arranged these fights after signing Alvarez to a four-fight deal under Riyadh Season. The Mexican boxer’s upcoming fight is against IBF super middleweight champion William Scull in May 2025. Following that, Canelo is expected to face Terence Crawford in September 2025.

When Joe Rogan indirectly blamed Canelo Alvarez’s diet for his defeat against Dmitry Bivol

Canelo Alvarez has been a professional boxer for over a decade. Interestingly, he has only been defeated twice during this time. His most recent loss came against Dmitry Bivol in a light heavyweight title fight. Since Canelo was competing against a higher weight class opponent, Joe Rogan expressed concerns about the Mexican boxer’s diet.

Interestingly, the UFC commentator is a well-known advocate of a meat-based diet. Rogan frequently engages in discussions about his carnivore diet, highlighting its advantages and benefits. In light of Canelo’s need to gain weight and increase strength for his fight against Bivol, Rogan expressed his dissatisfaction with Canelo’s decision to follow a vegan diet at that time.

He watched that documentary on Netflix, ‘The Game Changers’. If you wanna eat only vegan, and you wanna do it for ethical reasons, and you don’t wanna be involved in animal death, I get it. You don’t wanna be involved in factory farming; I get it. But it’s not true when you say that it gives you a significant athletic performance boost—it doesn’t.

Rogan was an active taekwondo practitioner and has been in the combat sports community for over a decade now. With his experience in the fitness world, the UFC commentator openly discusses the dietary methods of several prominent combat sports athletes. Rogan assessment of Canelo’s dietary plans is one such example of it.
