A fantastic and grueling England vs. India series saw some fantastic individual performances from both sides. One such consistent performer for the hosts was Joe Root. Root started the series off slowly but came into his own from the third Test match and then looked unstoppable with three back to back centuries.
In his rather consistent series Root surpassed many greats like Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting in the tally of the most number of Test match runs. Now he stands second to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar in the list.
With all those runs and tons behind his back he stands at 39 Test centuries. However, if one does a break down of those illustrious hundreds by country, an astonishing but glaring stat pops up. Of the 39 hundreds Joe Root has scored 24 off them on his home turf. That makes sense with the amount of matches he plays in England.
He has enjoyed good success in countries like West Indies, India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. The star batter has scored four hundreds under his belt in the Caribbean and three each in India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Root, adding to this has a solitary ton in both Pakistan and South Africa as well.

Remarkably despite playing over 150 test matches Root is yet to score a Test match hundred in Australia. There is no doubt that the English modern day great possesses versatility as he has scored runs in swinging and spinning conditions. He also has cracked the pace and hostility of South Africa.
Somehow Root hasn’t been able to achieve a three digit score in the pace and bounce of Australia and often has been found vulnerable to those wickets. The best score that Root has managed to get down under is 89.
It may well be the case of being under pressure in an overseas Ashes series and that may well have got the better of Root. With another opportunity in front of him Root would be eyeing a big hundred to silence the critics.
How good are Joe Root’s Ashes numbers in Australia?
Joe Root has like any modern day great maintained his standards where he travels for the English team. However, in Australia the batter becomes a submissive version of himself with a lack of consistency and numbers far below his overall stats.

In the 14 Tests (27 innings) that Root has played in Australia, he has scored 892 runs at an ordinary average of 35.68 by his standards. In the total runs scored by him there, Root has crossed the 50 run mark on 9 separate occasions. However, has been unable to cross the century mark in the foreign conditions.
Root has a golden opportunity in front of him considering the fact that the captaincy burden has been lifted off him and he now is a man with more than 150 Test matches under his belt. That freedom and experience can allow him to better his stats and more importantly be the main player in England doing well in conditions they have massively struggled to make their own.
With not much cricket for Root to play in English colors before the Ashes, the batter will look to toughen himself against the relentless bowlers of Australia. The likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins have had his number and Root will look to reply in fine fashion this time around.
