Joel Embiid's missed games count left fans surprised

The Philadelphia 76ers win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday marked a major occasion for the team. Not only was it one of the better wins of the season for the Sixers, but it marked another game that they played without their franchise cornerstone Joel Embiid. Embiid’s absence from the game, as he continues to deal with knee soreness, marked the 400th career game that he has missed.

That stat is remarkable for any NBA star, but especially for Joel Embiid, who has played across a total of 846 games, playing 446 of those and missing the other 400. Given his massive contract extensions with the Sixers, Embiid’s missed game count would mean that the former MVP has earned $125,695,189 of his total career earnings of nearly $265.8 million while watching on from the bench.

These are staggering numbers from one of the most exciting and dominant players in the league, yet they seem to encapsulate the story of Joel Embiid’s career perfectly. After being drafted in 2014, Embiid would miss his first two seasons in the league due to injury before making his NBA debut in the 2016-17 NBA season. Since missing his first two seasons, the injury count has not taken a dip for Embiid.

He has been under heavy criticism for his load management this season, having already missed 34 games this season after missing the Sixers’ win over the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday. His healthiest season so far in his career has been his 2021-22 season and his 2022-23 MVP campaign, having played 68 and 66 games, respectively, in each of those seasons.

Fans left stunned after Joel Embiid’s missed game count crosses 400

Joel Embiid has been on the wrong end of criticism for most of the last few seasons. Most of the criticism directed towards him has been due to his injury-prone tendencies and load management concerns. After seeing the mind-boggling stat of Embiid earning a staggering $125 million while sitting on the Sixers sidelines, fans did not hesitate to express their shock and dismay.

After missing Wednesday’s game against the Kings, Embiid marked the 34th game this season that he has watched along from the Sixers sidelines. He continues to deal with knee soreness and injury management for the repeated swelling in his knee. He last suited up for the Sixers on Jan 4. and has appeared in only 13 games this season.

For now, he continues to undergo treatment for his knee, with the latest update from the team’s medical staff suggesting that he is responding well to the treatment after a recent inflammation had forced him to prolong his absence from the court. Hopefully, the big fella gets to make a comeback soon, as the Sixers seem to turn a corner in their playoff push with Tyrese Maxey steering the boat for the team.
