The penultimate day of the Tokyo Olympics will see one of the most anticipated and exciting finals, as the men’s javelin throw takes place. Johannes Vetter of Germany is the favourite to finish on the podium, but not far behind him is India’s Neeraj Chopra. One of the biggest hopes for India’s first athletics medal, Chopra is hoping to carry over the momentum of the qualifying, where he had the highest throw, a 86.65m.

Hot on his heels though, Johannes Vetter is looking to perform to his full potential with a personal best throw of 97.76m. The rivalry between the two however, is only on the field, as both the athletes are good friends off it. They are good friends, and Vetter said that Chopra is open minded and friendly.

The two took a car ride together from Helsinki to Kuortone, where they spoke about everything but their sport. They spoke about family, private life, and situations in their own country, he told the IndianExpress in an interview. It is enlightening for them to know about each other’s lives and new experiences from all over the world. Vetter said that he really respects what Chopra is doing for the sport especially in India.

Vetter has a big fan following in India, and it has been a collective effort from Chopra and Vetter which has allowed the sport of Javelin to take off in India. The Indian community is very supportive of the friendly rivalry between the two, which makes for an exciting Games.

Neeraj Chopra qualified for the finals of javelin at the Tokyo Olympics with the highest throw of the day on his very first attempt, a 86.65m. Vetter seemed to have a slightly off day, but qualified with a throw of 85.64m. Vetter has a season best of an impressive 96.29m, while Chopra has a season best and personal best of 88.07m. Chopra is a favourite to finish on the podium this year at the Tokyo Olympics, after an impressive and consistent performance over the years.
