Former Australian Coach, John Buchanan, has talked about how Team India can go on to win the Border-Gavaskar trophy in Australia for the third consecutive time in Australia. Buchanan thinks Nathan Lyon, Cameron Green, or Mitchell Marsh can make it difficult for the Indians on the Australian conditions.

The 71-year-old also feels that India’s top order, comprising of the likes of Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer have to perform against the fearsome bowling attack of Australia. If they manage to do so, India’s bowling attack can put the pressure on the Australian batters.

This forms a very powerful bowling lineup. India's top order, with players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit SharmaVirat Kohli, and possibly Shreyas Iyer, will need to bat exceptionally well to set competitive totals. Only then can their bowlers, such as Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj, capitalize.
John Buchanan said during the launch of a multi-sport program at CP Goenka International School

Buchanan also feels that the past victories of India in Australia don’t give them the edge in the upcoming series as the central figures of the wins comprising of the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane won’t be featuring in the series. He thinks that both the teams have the players who want to play and perform at their very best at this point of time.

India have complete dominancy over Australia in the recent Border-Gavaskar series

Australia have not managed to beat India in the Border-Gavaskar series since the 2014-15 series at home. India will travel to Australia for a 5-match Test series at the end of 2024. India have won the two series at home and also away from home. The Indian team that arrived to the Australian shores in 2018, put up a herculean display under Kohli and beat the Aussies 2-1. This was their first ever Test series victory on Australia soil.

However, two years later in 2020-21, they put on an even more heroic display against a fully fit Australian side. They got dismissed for 36 in the second innings of the first Test in Adelaide and suffered a humiliating defeat. With their captain and star batter, Kohli, returning back home for the birth of his child, India were staring down the barrel. However, a determined Indian side under Rahane fought back hard in spite of injury issues and players missing in team, and defeated the Aussies 2-1.

They also breached Australia’s fortress, the Gabba, in the final Test, to register a historic Border-Gavaskar series win. Aussies did show some fight in the 2023 tour of India. However, India still managed to win the series 2-1. The Australians then went on to beat India in the ICC World Test Championship final in 2023 in Oval.
