It’s been over a month since John Cena wrestled his last match in WWE. The man who made the 17-time world champion tap out for the first time since 2004—Gunther—is still piggybacking off that finish to garner heat. Was it the right move or was it not? That will always be subject to umpteen different opinions.
But Cena, around whom the entire discourse is centered, was recently asked about his take on the way he went out. ‘The Cenation Leader’ told MuscleManMalcolm during a fan expo in New Orleans that it poetically aligned with pretty much how his career had been—a mix of “it sucked” and “perfect.” Those were the exact reactions of a completely divided fanbase to Gunther making Cena give up at SNME.
I guess kind of a parallel to my career, I think it was a perfect end because a lot of people thought it sucked and a whole lot of people thought it was special. And that’s kind of been my story for 23 years, so I thought it was perfect.

‘The Franchise Player’ has previously explained the rationale behind putting a smile on his face just before tapping out to ‘The Ring General’. CM Punk, often considered one of Cena’s greatest rivals, was in the building for the wrestling great’s swansong. ‘The Best in the World’ is also among those siding with the section of audience that has justified the ending to Cena vs. Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Punk said during a recent interview with Robbie Fox that what he saw with the finish was beautiful. In fact, since the people are still having long-winded conversations about it is a testament to things done right. The former AEW star also slammed the fickle side of modern-day internet fans by quipping that the so-called “experts” would’ve still disliked it had Cena won.
The arena reaction to the Hollywood mogul’s loss saw WWE CCO Triple H bearing the brunt of thousands of irate fans in attendance.
‘The Game’, however, was reportedly thrilled about the negative crowd responses to the ending that morphed Gunther into the most loathed wrestler on the current WWE roster. The longest-reigning NXT UK Champion would then, for weeks, brag about making John Cena “tap out like a little bi*ch.”
CM Punk talks about working with John Cena in DCU
CM Punk seems quite optimistic about a potential reunion with John Cena—this time on the big screen. In a recent interview with MovieWeb’s Joe Deckelmeier, the ‘Second City Saint’ made it clear that he believes another collaboration with Cena is inevitable. Punk admitted he would be “a fool” to say they wouldn’t work together again, even if the timing and platform remain uncertain.

The ex-AEW star pointed to director James Gunn as a key factor, comparing him to a wrestling booker with a long-term vision. With Gunn now heavily involved in shaping the DC Universe and John Cena playing a major role through Peacemaker, ‘The Voice of the Voiceless’ acknowledged that opportunities will depend on whether he fits into Gunn’s creative vision or not.

While the ‘Cookie Master’ stressed that nothing is confirmed, he affirmed that working with ‘Mr. Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect’ again would be a dream scenario. Punk, who was promoting his upcoming movie Night Patrol, further reiterated about acting with another wrestler-turned-actor, Dave Bautista. Last year, ‘The Straight Edge Superstar’ told DEADLINE that he’d love to do a rom-com with ‘The Animal’.
