AJ Styles has made it clear time and again that he will retire from in-ring competition in 2026. He reiterated that during the Crown Jewel pre-show event in Perth before facing John Cena one last time. They put on a stellar show in the land down under, paying tribute to a ton of their career-best rivals by borrowing their moves, with Cena emerging victorious in the end.
‘The Cenation Leader’ recently joined Chris Van Vliet on Insight and revealed that he got to talk a bit with Styles off camera while they were inching toward their last match against each other. Cena took ‘Mr. TNA’ aside to gather where his head was at in terms of mapping out his retirement plans. The 17-time world champion asked if Styles wanted to emulate the way he announced his retirement 15 months in advance and embarked on a full-blown tour.
Styles responded by reminding Cena of his current age, which had pretty much said it all. ‘The Franchise Player’ understood that Styles doesn’t have a farewell tour planned in mind. Citing reasons for it, the Peacemaker star pointed out that every wrestler who’s in their late 40s feels like they’re overstaying their welcome physically.
John Cena comments on AJ Styles' WWE retirement plans:

"AJ Styles, such a great dude. I got to talk to him a little bit while we were locked in our program.
"I'm like 'Man, AJ, there are a lot of people who really admire you out there. I know you're thinking of calling it… pic.twitter.com/N2raepivH6
‘The Phenomenal One’ told Cena that’s exactly what he’s been feeling, but the fans don’t realize it because they aren’t privy to what goes into maintaining a ripped physique after reaching a certain age. The preparation for every match gets tougher, the recovery process takes much longer, and the body doesn’t cool down that quickly either.
Cena said that the fans aren’t ready to accept it just because Styles still works almost seamlessly inside the ring. However, the Heads of State actor affirmed that Styles doesn’t want to tarnish that version of him, which the fans admire him for. ‘The Cenation Leader’ added that he’s applying the same logic, which is why he’s retiring this weekend.
John Cena heaps massive praise on AJ Styles while being asked to describe him in one word
In the aforementioned interview, John Cena was asked to describe some of his WWE opponents in a word or so. When AJ Styles’ name came up, ‘Mr. Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect’ uttered, “The best ever to do it.” While joking that Shawn Michaels would be upset about him putting Styles in that light, Cena underscored there’s not a lot he couldn’t do.

A bunch of fans believe that Cena was particularly talking about ‘The Face that Runs the Place’ being the best when it comes to pulling off incredible performances inside the ring. ‘The Babe Ruth of WWE’ hailed Styles for making difficult stuff look easy, which is something not god-gifted. Instead, if the difficult becomes seamless, it simply means it’s been practiced thousands of times.
"Best to ever do it."

In another excerpt from his chat with Van Vliet, Cena explained why he apologized to a few people backstage in WWE over handing out a special piece of introduction for AJ Styles at Crown Jewel. The Hollywood mogul said he wanted to do something nice for his opponent that night but didn’t tell a single person about it. Even the ring announcer, Alicia Taylor, found out about it on the fly, let alone the people in the back.

“I know where I f***** up. I’m so sorry. I went into business for myself. That’s not me.”

Cena felt bad for not running it by the management beforehand, and that’s what it means to go into business for oneself. Cena later issued his sincere apologies to the concerned authorities after he returned backstage and assured them of never repeating it.
Despite him feeling that he was in the wrong, Cena accomplished his task of making Styles feel special in a description that declared him as “The Definition of Total Nonstop Action” and also, “The Ace and Undisputed Boss of The Bullet Club.”
