John Cena will be returning to WWE in 2025 for the final run of his illustrious career. As Cena prepares to hang up his jorts by the end of next year, it seems that the company has begun planning for his retirement tour. As per WRKD Wrestling, WWE has already penned in for The Cenation Leader to face a newly crowned champion. The name in question is none other than the World Heavyweight Champion, Gunther.

During the SummerSlam post-show press conference, Triple H confirmed that Cena will be returning in time for the Royal Rumble. Therefore, The Franchise Player could enter the 30-man battle royal. Obviously, the wrestler-turned-actor will be gunning to break the record for most world title wins, having already tied Ric Flair for sixteen. Moreover, the prospect of a match against the best wrestler in WWE would be difficult to miss out on.

Gunther finally got his hands on the world championship when he defeated Damian Priest at SummerSlam. In a hard-hitting match, The Ring General required outside assistance to put away The Archer of Infamy. Regardless, fans are excited to see what’s in store for the Austrian wrestler’s reign. Since Triple H took over the creative realm in 2022, the Imperium leader has gone on to break records, including becoming the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion.

A title vs. career match could also be on the cards if Gunther manages to keep hold of the belt by next year’s WrestleMania. As such, John Cena may end up being one of the favorites to win the Royal Rumble match. Nonetheless, only time will tell whether these two wrestling icons lock horns during the sixteen-time world champion’s retirement tour.

Gunther’s not the only new champion John Cena could face next year

SummerSlam saw four newly crowned champions. While Gunther won the World Heavyweight Championship, the ‘unstoppable’ Bron Breakker won his first main roster title. The Dawg of WWE defeated Sami Zayn to become the Intercontinental Champion. Right after winning the belt, Breakker laid a challenge to John Cena for his newly won championship.

Speaking to SEScoops, the former NXT Champion called out Cena ahead of his retirement tour. Asking the future HOF’er to “grow some balls,” Breakker mentioned how he had never won the Intercontinental title throughout his 22-year career.

Previously, the second-generation wrestler expressed interest in facing The Cenation Leader in 2025. After announcing his retirement at Money in the Bank, the legend revealed that creative planning was in the hands of WWE. Having said that, a ‘passing of the torch’ moment could be seen if Cena does face Breakker.
