Wrestling for the last time in his backyard of Boston, John Cena scripted history on this week’s Raw. The 48-year-old captured the Intercontinental Championship for the first time in his legendary WWE career by defeating Dominik Mysterio. It ended the latter’s stranglehold on the mid-card title after a period of 204 days. Cena has finally broken silence after experiencing a new career high.
Taking to X, the Peacemaker actor tried putting into words how much it meant to him to be able to perform in front of his own people one last time. Cena emphasized the importance of fan investment in making what goes on inside the ring meaningful. The clip attached in the said post features the WWE legend holding the Intercontinental title up high with tears of joy in his eyes.
Thank you Boston. It meant so much to be able, for one last time, to be allowed an opportunity to do what I love, in a place I love, surrounded by those I love. Our performances are only meaningful if YOU the audience invest in us and decide they are. The smile on my face and awe… pic.twitter.com/divMEgK9RG

‘The Cenation Leader’ ran out of words and simply wrote that his final WWE experience in Boston meant more to him than he could ever express. More than 16,500 fans flocked to the TD Garden to witness their local hero. The opening segment of Raw showcased WWE CCO Triple H objectively declaring Cena as the greatest of all time. After soaking in the energy from a raucous crowd, ‘The Franchise Player’ got interrupted by Dominik Mysterio.
For someone who’s been internally viewed as the future of WWE, the Judgment Day member justified his minutes. And by no stretch did he get overwhelmed by the magnitude of going toe-to-toe with arguably the greatest trash talker in WWE history. The self-proclaimed ‘King of the Luchadores’ proved that he belonged with the absolute best and didn’t look out of place for once.
Big E on why the John Cena rub was important to Dominik Mysterio
For those concerned about Dominik Mysterio getting crushed by John Cena in the latter’s fourth-to-last WWE appearance, Big E has summed it up to perfection for the doubters. Speaking on Raw Recap, the former New Day member underscored how there wasn’t even an iota of trepidation on Mysterio’s face when he came face-to-face with Cena on Raw.

In fact, to Big E, he saw a man who didn’t get flustered by how big the moment was and held his ground as someone who believed he deserved to be there. The WWE panelist added that Mysterio’s faceoff with ‘The Cenation Leader’ was something that the fans will fondly look back on when ‘Dom’ eventually becomes a world champion a year or two from now.

The Ricky Stanicky actor has spoken very highly of the 28-year-old in the past. It certainly appears that sharing the ring with him was on Cena’s wish list for his farewell tour. While they only interacted on this week’s Raw, the substance they were to provide off it has the fans convinced that their stuff was one of the few bright spots about an otherwise tumultuous retirement tour.
John Cena pushed for NXT involvement at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13
One of the most significant talking points from John Cena’s Raw appearance in Boston was him announcing what else will happen on the same night as his wrestling swansong. ‘The Prototype’ confirmed that his retirement will close one chapter, but it’s pivotal to pave the road for the next generation of WWE wrestlers.

In an initiative to give those budding men and women an opportunity to prove themselves, Cena coined a concept that’ll see WWE main roster names hold exhibition matches against some of the best NXT has to offer at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13. ‘The Cenation Leader’ thanked Triple H during his promo for making it possible.
John Cena reportedly made the decision for NXT talent to be showcased the night of his final match:
