John Cena will wrestle his last match in WWE tonight at Saturday Night’s Main Event. The past few days have been all about tributes pouring in, and it was no different on this week’s SmackDown. WWE aired some video messages featuring retired NFL quarterbacks, viz., Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, singer Jelly Roll, and Jimmy Fallon.

Starting with Brady, he affirmed that Cena has inspired not only the people he’s been in the ring with but also those outside of it. ‘Tom Terrific’ hoped for the Peacemaker actor to have a much better performance in his retirement match than the NFL great, whose last match with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers resulted in a 14-31 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in January 2023.

Next up, Eli Manning hailed Cena for winning a ton of championships, which were almost impressive enough to make him forget that ‘The Cenation Leader’ used to be a diehard Patriots fan.

Eli’s older brother, Peyton Manning, also jumped on the bandwagon by congratulating the WWE Grand Slam Champion on his retirement from the business. WWE Hall of Famer Snoop Dogg said he’d light one up to honor Cena, while Jelly Roll and Jimmy Fallon also got their words in by reminding everyone what Cena has meant to WWE.

In a matter of hours, ‘Mr. Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect’ will walk out in front of almost 20,000 rabid fans in Washington, D.C., at the Capital One Arena.

Cena, who’s pushing 50, is slated for a daunting task, with Gunther being the one he’ll stand across from at Saturday Night’s Main Event. ‘The Prototype’ confirmed on The Pat McAfee Show that his wrestling swansong will go on last, contrary to some online rumors previously suggesting otherwise.

In news that’ll only add to the anticipation of what’s going to be an emotionally wrecking night, there’s reportedly no fixed runtime listed for SNME, as it’s no longer airing on NBC. The show could go on for as long as WWE wishes it to, meaning there’s no room for the hard cut, unlike the Goldberg retirement match from earlier this year, where his post-match speech got abruptly cut for the viewers at home.

The Miz also paid tribute to John Cena on SmackDown

One of John Cena‘s most important WWE rivals also paid homage to ‘The Last Real Champion’ on SmackDown. And it’s none other than The Miz. The latter had a match with NXT upstart Je’Von Evans, which came about after their backstage confrontation and Miz taking offense to Evans calling him “unc.”

At one point, ‘The A-Lister’ brought out the “You Can’t See Me” emote to honor Cena. Miz even landed the Five Knuckle Shuffle on ‘The Young OG’ in a moment that the crowd cheered for. Even though the 8-time Intercontinental Champion didn’t get to wrestle the man he main evented WrestleMania with in 2011, he’s not mad about it.

While recently appearing on Sports Illustrated with Jimmy Traina, the former world champion noted that certain circumstances took his match with Cena away, and it never came back. Miz said he was the first one to throw his name in the hat when ‘The Franchise Player’ dropped the bombshell on his retirement at Money in the Bank in 2024.

‘The Awesome One’ didn’t sweat anyone but joked that he’s pinning the blame on his fans, who didn’t rally behind him for a match against John Cena the same way AJ Styles‘ fans did, leading to their showdown at Crown Jewel. Miz said he went to everyone in the office he could possibly go to seek one last bout with ‘The Babe Ruth of WWE’, but the stars never aligned themselves.

The former Melo Don’t Miz member revealed he isn’t indignant about things not working out, as he’s been in WWE long enough to know that things don’t always happen as one expects them to in this business.

The former 2-time Grand Slam champ was one of the participants in The Last Time is Now tournament to determine Cena’s final opponent. He lost to Jey Uso in the first round but cheated his way back into the tourney as Sheamus‘ replacement, only to lose to LA Knight in the next round and get eliminated.
