The most awaited part of John Cena‘s farewell tour is almost here. In less than three weeks’ time, the Hollywood mogul will stand across from one of his greatest WWE rivals in AJ Styles at Crown Jewel. It was that sort of match that the fans had on top of their bucket lists for Cena’s last year as an active wrestler. Now that they’re finally getting it, the ‘Cenation Leader’ has extended a note of gratitude to WWE CCO Triple H.
The wrestler-turned-actor thanked the ‘Cerebral Assassin’ for being flexible and rewarding the true driving force behind Cena vs. Styles—the fans. ‘The Franchise Player’ referred to the couple of social media posts he made recently in which he openly asked everyone if they wanted to see him share the ring with ‘The Phenomenal One’ once again.
The said posts on X did impressive numbers, with both of them crossing the 10 million views mark. In the second post, Cena mentioned that he doesn’t choose his opponents but also noted that he’d always listen to the fans. While doing so, he tagged both Styles and, more importantly, the WWE Chief Content Officer and asked whether they were listening to the voices of the WWE Universe.

Shortly after that, ‘The Game’ came up with the official announcement of Cena vs. Styles at Crown Jewel. The fourteen-time world champion wrote that Cena vs. Styles is a match that everyone wanted to see, and they will in Perth at Crown Jewel. The upcoming clash between these two icons of the business will mark their fourth meeting at a WWE premium live event.
I want to thank @TripleH for being flexible here and rewarding the true driving force behind #CenavsStyles .. the FANS! 2 posts over 10m views and so many of you let yourself be heard! #WWECrownJewel Perth and @AJStylesOrg you will get my everything. Listening to our audience is…

As of now, the ‘Face That Runs the Place’ is 2-1 up, with his only PLE loss coming at Royal Rumble in 2017 when he dropped the WWE title to a near-invincible Cena. They also wrestled once on SmackDown in February 2018, where the ‘Franchise Player’ pinned the then-WWE Champ Styles to get added to the title match at Fastlane.
Did John Cena opt to lose to Brock Lesnar at Wrestlepalooza?
The most recent John Cena outing was a heavily criticized showdown with Brock Lesnar at Wrestlepalooza to kick off a new era on ESPN. In a sub-9-minute match, the Heads of State actor got absolutely pummeled by ‘The Beast Incarnate’.
Lesnar never allowed Cena to build a real stretch of momentum. It eventually resulted in Cena registering his second pinfall loss in a singles match on this retirement tour.

Dave Meltzer shed some light on whether a different finish was planned for Cena vs. Lesnar via Wrestling Observer Radio. As per the veteran journalist, it was ‘The Prototype’ himself who made the call to lose to the former UFC ace. Since Cena is almost done with his in-ring career in WWE, it made sense to him to put over whoever he’s sharing the ring with on these remaining dates.

"I don't wanna say it was John's idea, but what I was basically told is, John is very unselfish, and he knows on the way out he wants to make people. He wants to make big stars. So he felt that was… it's his… pic.twitter.com/0XgD5rwTi9
On the contrary, a report from BodySlam revealed that Cena was originally planned to beat Lesnar at Wrestlepalooza as of the morning of the show. But it obviously got changed, and the exact reason wasn’t listed.
Now that ‘The Beast’ is in Cena’s rearview mirror, he needs to focus on what’s ahead of him—AJ Styles. Moreover, it’s just come out in the public domain that Dominik Mysterio is being considered as one of Cena’s opponents before he completely bows out.

John Cena vs IC Champion Dominik Mysterio has reportedly been discussed for one of Cena’s final few appearances.

Mysterio was just in a feud with Styles, who’s confirmed to battle the 17-time world champion at Crown Jewel. It’d be interesting to see if WWE somehow intertwines all these elements to allow Cena segue into a short-term story with ‘Dirty Dom’.
If not, an open challenge for the Intercontinental Championship might also work. ‘The Cenation Leader’ has never won the IC title in his career. What if he does it to become a grand slam champion right in the twilight of his career? Only time will tell.
