John Cena’s 177th and final Premium Live Event match ended in heartbreak as the 17-time world champion was overwhelmed by the full force of The Judgment Day at Survivor Series. Though the consensus wrestling GOAT ultimately lost the Intercontinental Championship, his showdown with Dominik Mysterio delivered a chaotic spectacle in front of Mysterio’s hometown crowd in San Diego.

The match opened with Cena gaining the early advantage, applying a side headlock and taking Dom over cleanly. Mysterio created separation and quickly turned to distraction tactics, drawing referee Chad Patton away while Roxanne Perez tripped Cena from the floor.

With momentum shifted, Dom began posing arrogantly on the turnbuckles before raining down right hands. Cena tried to battle back, but Raquel Rodriguez slipped in a cheap shot behind the ref’s back, leading to a nearfall.

Mysterio attempted the Three Amigos, scoring another two-count, and continued stomping Cena into the corner. But as Cena rallied, Dom fled to the ringside and sought cover behind Perez and Rodriguez. When Cena turned his back, Dom darted forward with another cheap shot, then showboated on the steel steps before sending Cena crashing off the barricade.

A Frankensteiner attempt was countered into a thunderous powerbomb, leaving Mysterio clutching his shoulder in apparent agony. Referee Patton checked on Dom, even calling for a medic, giving Rodriguez the opening to deliver her signature one-arm powerbomb to Cena in the ring.

Perez followed with a mocking “You can’t see me!” and hit the Pop Rox for good measure. Dominik instantly recovered, hit the 619, and landed a frog splash, only for Patton to refuse the pin due to the earlier interference. Moreover, Perez and Rodriguez protested and were swiftly ejected.

With the distractions gone, Cena mounted a fiery comeback with shoulder blocks, a Blue Thunder Driver, and the Five Knuckle Shuffle. He locked in the STF, but Dom clung desperately to the ropes. Cena even removed Mysterio’s boot during the struggle, yet Dom still managed another 619 and a frog splash, which Cena survived.

Cena then hit the Attitude Adjustment, but Mysterio kicked out to shock the crowd. A collision sent Patton tumbling to the floor, leaving no official as Finn Balor and JD McDonagh stormed in. Cena fought them off and delivered a double Attitude Adjustment, then hit Dom with another AA, but still lacked a referee.

That’s when Liv Morgan appeared. Returning for the first time since injuring her shoulder in June earlier this year, the former Women’s world champion swiftly headed to the ring. Smiling sweetly at Mysterio, she suddenly slapped him across the face, only to turn and low-blow Cena moments later.

Morgan then blasted Cena with the belt, setting up Dom’s final frog splash as she revived Patton. Dominik Mysterio pinned Cena to become the new and 2-time Intercontinental champion, closing Cena’s storied PLE career in stunning yet controversial fashion.

Chris Jericho makes a reference to John Cena’s PLE history ahead of Survivor Series

With John Cena suffering defeat in his final Premium Live Event appearance at the hands of Dominik Mysterio, WWE has officially set the stage for the last match of his storied career. Scheduled for December 13th at Saturday Night’s Main Event, the 17-time world champion will look to close the curtain on his legendary run with one final memorable performance.

Meanwhile, ‘The Last Time is Now’ tournament has reached its critical phase. The semi-finals are now locked in: Gunther will clash with Solo Sikoa, while Jey Uso squares off against LA Knight

But even with these high-stakes showdowns ahead, much of the buzz centers on the rumored surprise WWE has been teasing or someone, waiting in the rafters to make Cena’s farewell even bigger. For weeks, whispers have circulated that marquee names such as Edge and Chris Jericho could return to WWE to face Cena in his last outing.

Both men are currently on hiatus from AEW, fueling fan speculation that WWE might bring back one of Cena’s greatest rivals for a final dream match. Jericho only added gasoline to that fire recently. Ahead of Survivor Series, the six-time world champion took to Instagram to share a nostalgic throwback referencing John Cena’s first-ever PLE match, an encounter against Jericho himself at Vengeance 2002

At that time, Cena was a complete unknown, yet he famously scored an upset victory over the inaugural Undisputed WWE champion. Jericho’s post sent fans into a frenzy, wondering whether the timing was more than a coincidence.

Though Y2J did not appear in San Diego, the rumors remain strong. Jericho has been absent from AEW programming since April 2025, and his contract is reportedly set to expire at the end of the year. Combined with increasing speculation of a potential return and possibly a farewell tour to cap off his 30-year career, the timing couldn’t be more intriguing.

With Cena preparing for the final match of his life on December 13th, all eyes are now on Jericho’s next move. Will the Ayatollah of Rock ’n’ Rolla return to WWE just in time to close one era while honoring another? WWE fans won’t have to wait long to find out.
