John McEnroe gave a hilarious verdict on why Andy Murray became a coach just a few months after retirement. Murray joined Novak Djokovic‘s team in November after hanging up his racket at the Paris Olympics.

McEnroe claimed Murray wouldn’t have called time on his career if he didn’t have fitness problems. But now that he has retired, McEnroe joked that the Scot is not able to manage his four kids at home.

Andy is searching. He’s got four kids, I’ve got six kids. So he is like… ‘I need a break! He sorta got pushed into retirement because his body wouldn’t hold up.

John McEnroe said on Served with Andy Roddick podcast

Murray will be in Djokovic’s entourage for the Australian Open but it’s uncertain whether the partnership would be extended beyond the Grand Slam event in Melbourne. McEnroe however is confident that Murray won’t be coaching his longtime rival for a long time.

I’m sure this is going to be extremely short-lived, but in a way, I’m hoping he wins it (Australian Open) because of the interest it brings to tennis around the world.

John McEnroe added

Djokovic added Murray to his team after parting ways with Goran Ivanisevic. He will kick start his campaign for the 2025 season at the Brisbane International, where he is also set to play doubles with Nick Kyrgios.

Laura Robson says Andy Murray will watch matches for hours and hours

Laura Robson, when she learned about the Andy MurrayNovak Djokovic collaboration, thought it was April Fools’ Day. But now she thinks it makes total sense, claiming that there are few from the tennis world who could relate to Djokovic and how he feels in certain situations during matches.

Andy’s got such a tennis brain. He will sit down and watch tactics and watch matches for hours and hours. You knew that every time you stepped on the court against Andy, he would try to outwork you and try to outfox you.

Laura Robson told Eurosport

While her compatriot Tim Henman is excited to see whether Djokovic would shout at his box with Murray in it, Robson thinks they wouldn’t have that type of partnership because they respect each other. Murray has met Djokovic 36 times and won 11 of those matches. They last met in the fourth round of the 2022 Madrid Open which the 24-time Major champion won.
