American tennis icon John McEnroe has praised Andy Murray and called for the Brit to be honored with a statue at the All-England Club. McEnroe stated that Murray’s contributions have helped the growth of British tennis and he deserves a reward to be rewarded for the same.

Murray has had success on home soil, having won two of his three Grand Slam titles at the Wimbledon Championships. His title win at SW19 in 2013 ended a wait of 77 years for a home champion. The veteran is on the verge of retirement and might not feature at the 2024 edition of the grass Slam.

McEnroe said he would not have given the idea a second thought if it was up to him and hailed Murray as one of the greatest competitors in tennis.

If I was making that decision, I would say absolutely, yes, because that's a long drought, 77 years. He's absolutely changed the way people look at British tennis. He's one of the greatest competitors that I've ever seen play tennis. It would be well deserved, and it'd be awesome because two of his three Grand Slam wins were at Wimbledon plus the Olympics. So that would seem to make a whole lot of sense.

Apart from winning two titles at Wimbledon, Murray also won an Olympic singles gold medal on home soil, beating Roger Federer in the final at the 2012 London Olympics.

John McEnroe hopes for Andy Murray to have one last dance at Wimbledon

Although Andy Murray spent most of his career in the shadow of the Big Three, John McEnroe hailed the Briton for achieving everything he had despite the dominance of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.

McEnroe also expressed his desire to see Murray in his home Grand Slam tournament for one last time.

It would be awesome if Murray could have one last hurrah. He was part of the Big Four and he finished 2016 as the best player in the world...So he's still going to be considered one of the great players of his era. Obviously, he's going to be below those other guys but so was everyone else. So he's had a tremendous career.
John McEnroe said of Andy Murray.

While fans and pundits are eager to see Murray compete at the Championships, it is unlikely that the 37-year-old will be able to recover from a minor back procedure in time to compete at Wimbledon. He took part in the tournament last year and beat Ryan Peniston in straight sets before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round.
