Tennis great John McEnroe thinks the craziest news he heard was Novak Djokovic‘s announcement of hiring Andy Murray as his coach. Murray is in Melbourne with Djokovic on a quest to guide his old rival to his 11th Australian Open title.
Djokovic and Murray would be working at least till the Australian Open. McEnroe, however, has an interesting theory about this collaboration as he claimed that after his first coaching stint, Murray, who bade his farewell to tennis at the 2024 Paris Olympics, would make a U-turn from retirement.
McEnroe recalled the time when the news of Murray signing Ivan Lendl as his coach came out. The 65-year-old, who shared an intense rivalry with Lendl and had faced him in 36 matches, thought at that time that the partnership with Murray would be a success. McEnroe, however, theorized that Murray will be back on tour as a player this year.

Andy Murray reveals the main goal behind the partnership with Novak Djokovic
Following his trophyless season on the tour last year, Novak Djokovic will be aiming to win his 25th Grand Slam title in the ongoing Australian Open. Last year, the only title the Serb won was the Olympic gold medal, and coach Andy Murray thinks the reason Djokovic was successful at the Paris Olympics was because he was motivated.
The three-time Grand Slam singles champion claimed that if Djokovic beats players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in big matches in the next couple of years, then he will cement himself as the best athlete of all time.
Djokovic last won a Major at the 2023 US Open and went close to another title when he reached the final of the 2024 Wimbledon, losing to Alcaraz. At the 2025 Australian Open, the 24-time Grand Slam champion will be locking horns with Nishesh Basavareddy in the first round.
