A lead in the first half wasn’t enough for Aston Villa to keep their momentum in place as Tottenham Hotspur was relentless in the second, steamrolling their counterparts to dust. After the staggering defeat, Aston Villa captain John McGinn opened up on the loss and underlined how the Lilywhites were merciless in terms of condemning their errors.

Morgan Rogers opened up the scoring for Aston Villa in the 32nd minute. Brennan Johnson restored parity for Tottenham in the 49th while a double whammy from Dominic Solanke in a span of four minutes propelled Villa to a 3-1 lead. James Maddison completed the rout in the 96th minute with another clinical finish.

We’ve got to keep our heads a wee bit in there and have some perspective. Many teams will come here and suffer that defeat. It got loud. Probably as loud as I’ve heard it as an away player. It’s about staying positive. Spurs beat us 4-1 last season and we finished above them. They punished our mistakes. We had a chance at 2-1 to equalise. The third one was a mistake and then a great free-kick from the fourth.

John McGinn said at the post-match presser after their defeat against Tottenham Hotspur

With this win, Tottenham climbed up to the seventh position of the points table while leaving behind Brighton and Bournemouth in what has so far been a close race. Aston Villa stayed rooted at the sixth spot with five wins and three draws from the ten games that they played in the season. This was their second defeat on the bounce as they lost against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup midweek.

Ange Postecoglou opens up on Son Heung-Min’s substitution

Despite the win, Tottenham Hotspur had a quizzed face in the dugout and that was of South Korean midfielder, Son Heung-Min. Things spiraled out of control when he was subbed as the expression on his face said it all.

However, Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou made it clear that it was a decision for the bigger picture and the team.

He (Son) was never going to play more than 55 minutes. Last time he came back from injury he got to the 60-minute mark and got injured again. He got through unscathed. I didn’t need to discuss it with him, you know for us what’s more important is the overall picture.

Ange Postecoglou told BBC Sport

Son returned from an injury copped during their contest against West Ham United. He complained about soreness since then and was out for three matches.

He came back against Aston Villa and carved one of the assists in the four-goal fest that was inflicted upon the latter. Tottenham will be back in action against Galatasaray on Thursday while they will be taking on Ipswich Town in next week of Premier League.
