The 2021 Australian Open is “most likely” be pushed back from its scheduled date of Jan 18th. Speculations are been made that it can begin a couple weeks late from February 1st.
Players will be able to arrive in Australia at the end of the first week of 2021 and train while separated from the community, according to a communication sent from the ATP to players.
However, Tennis Australia said it had not yet had it confirmed that players would be allowed to practice in quarantine because they were yet to be told by the government.
Australian player John Millman is currently in 14-day isolation and said that it would be almost impossible for players to compete in a Grand Slam after two weeks of no practice.
Recently, Brett Phillips invited Millman on his show ‘The First Serve‘. The duo discussed the upcoming Australian summer of tennis, the season-ending ATP Finals, and grassroots news.
“You just can’t do a two-week hard lockdown to get ready for an Australian Open. I don’t think any of the international players would do that. Your body is what pays the bills. You are an injury risk, you can’t go from zero to 100 right away, that’s the biggest risk,” Millman said.
While the possibility of the ATP Cup is still subject to speculation, other pre-Open events held in Brisbane, Hobart, and Adelaide will get shifted to Melbourne to make it convenient for the players. However, the quarantine program puts the lead-up events in jeopardy.
Millman heaps praise over the team of Australian Open
Speaking about the adverse situation put forth before Tennis Australia ahead of the opening Grand Slam of 2021, Millman remarked that the Tennis Australia team are of the best administrators in the world and hopes the players will get clarity on the schedule to plan accordingly.
”First and foremost, Tennis Australian and Australian Open team, in particular, are of the best-oiled machines in world tennis. Craig Tiley and his team are doing an incredible job. Their hands have been tied a little bit from my understanding, so as to getting some clarity out there on what the Australian summer is going to look like. It’s actually quite important because players really do have to start making those plans,” said Millman, during the podcast.
Tournament director Craig Tiley said the dates should be finalized within two weeks.
