The NBA has seen many ex-players and legends of the sport being compared against each other by various analysts in the NBA community over the years. Notably, Dan Patrick recently questioned John Salley about picking the better player between prime Larry Bird and prime LeBron James on the Dan Patrick Show.

While on “The Dan Patrick Show,” John Salley selected prime Larry Bird above peak LeBron James, knowing that the LA Lakers star had a successful NBA career. Salley claimed that Bird was something else back in his prime and gave him “nightmares.” Furthermore, when asked, Salley was hesitant to choose Shaquille O’Neal above Nikola Jokic.

I'm gonna give you Larry Bird in his prime or Prime LeBron in his prime.
Dan Patrick asked on his show
Larry Bird, I know I had nightmares (guarding him), do you?
John Salley responded

Salley made his decision based on his experiences of playing against Boston Celtics icon Larry Bird and the nightmares he still has from those encounters.

For Salley to choose Bird over Prime LeBron James speaks volumes of the qualities that Bird possessed back in his day. However, one could have different opinions regarding the same comparison, especially with James boasting one of the best careers in NBA history.

John Salley makes a bold admission regarding Larry Bird

Former Detroit Pistons player, John Salley has always been in awe of the Boston Celtics legend, Larry Bird. Also, Salley shared his views on a podcast where he claimed that Bird was a “Black guy that bleaches his skin.” This was somewhat of a hilarious take by Salley. In addition, most people had radios in the 1980s, and they used to believe that Bird was a Black player.

Larry Bird is a Black guy that bleaches his skin just so he won’t get in trouble going downtown Indiana. He (Larry) was just the business. He didn’t miss, those big shots went in, those big plays he made, he is gonna talk smack and sound like it. That’s when I knew he was just passing for white.
On the “Club Shay Podcast,” John Salley said

On the sports side, Bird was one of the Celtics’ finest. He won 3 NBA championships with them and was voted NBA MVP for 3 consecutive years, in 1984, 1985, and 1986. Interestingly, Bird was also the 1979-80 Rookie of the Year, beating his rival Magic Johnson by a mile back then.
